INTRODUCTION: Plants that possess therapeutic properties or exert benefical pharmacological effect on the human or animal body. EXAMPLES : Nim Cinchona Alovera Papaver Drug obtained from wild plants or also from Cultivated sources.
HISTORY : Father of Medicinal plant : HIPPOCRATES HIPPOCRATES 20,000 are known to be present in the world 15% present (3000-3500) of these found in india . As early as 5000 BC india developed a comprehensive form of healing called ayurved .
DRUG COLLECTION : It is very important to obtain a drug of good quality. It depends on : time of the year , time of the day stage of maturity age.

CINCHONA : - Family = Rubiaceae Common name = Red chinchona,Quinine Jesuits bark Also called " Cowntess bark" Occurance : Native of Andean highlands of South America India, Indonesia,Burma
Morphology : Evergreen Simple oppositely arranged leaves Flowers - tubular, small, Creamy white colour and Fragrant flowers Fruit - small and capsule
Collection of stem :- Drug obtained from the stem ( Bark ) * During rainy season and dries by the help of sun 🌞 * The bark is removed by uprooting the plant at the age of 12 years
Uses : Quinine - for malaria fever Also used for - Whooping cough Spleen enlargement Hay fever , pyameia There are present some other alkaloids excluding Quinine :- Chloroquine,quinidine
PAPAVER : Scientific name - papaver sammiferum Family - papaveraceae Common name - corn poppy or red poppy Occurance : Native of West Asia Uttar Pradesh Punjab M.p Rajastha n PAPAVER
Morphology : Absence of a stigma the presence of a sessile stigmatic disc Medium to tall Erect plant Leaves greyish green oblong Flowers are large Anthers pale yellow 120 cm long Morphology
Uses : cultivated in the warmer countries for it's universal popular drug " Opium". Obtained from - milky latex from the unripe capsule Alkaloids :- morphin narcotine Codeine Relieve pain To treat cough Diarrhea Abdominal cramping Asthma attack
DIGITALIS : Scientific name - Digitalis purpurea Family - scrophulariaceae Common name - Foxglove Drug obtained from - Dried leaves Occurance : Central Europe, England In India it is cultivated in : Nilgiri Hills Kashmir DIGITALIS
Morphology : Biennial herbs Leaves are rosette like Presence of pendent Irregular, purple or yellow coloured flowers Morphology Uses : For circulatory disorder It helps for the blood supply to the kidney Helps in blood circulation It used as myocardial stimulant in heart failure during congestion
CANNABIS : Scientific name - Cannabis sativa Family - Cannabinaceae Common name - "Ganja" & Bhang Drug obtained from - leaves Occurance : Assam ,west Bengal M.P , Tamilnadu , Maharashtra Odisha Uses : Used as a narcotic stimulant . Ganja is made from the Dried flower ing plants Used for smoking Hemp poduce a a sypnotic effect a general of ectasy
SIDE EFFECTS : Over doses is harmful to the body as it many cause :- Nausea , diarrhea, abdominal pain It produce negative effects : Allergic reaction Rashes Asthma Headache Vomiting
CONCLUSION : Plant have provided humans with many of their essential needs, including life saving pharmaceutical agents . Recently WHO estimated that 80% people world wide reply on herbal medicines. Many developing countries have intensified their efforts in documenting the ethanomedical data & scientific research on Medicinal plants.
