CAMBRIDGE SECONDARY ONE SCIENCE CHAPTER 3: LIVING THINGS IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT
3.1 ADAPTATIONS The place where an organism lives is called its habitat. Organisms have special adaptations that help them to live in their habitat.
3.1 ADAPTATIONS Fish have adaptations that help them to live in water The body is streamlined, reducing friction as the fish moves forward Fins help the fish to stay balanced The tail helps the fish to move forward through the water Gills absorb dissolved oxygen from the water The lateral line senses movement in the water around the fish
3.1 ADAPTATIONS Cacti have adaptations that help them to live in the desert, where there is not much water Thick waxy skin The thick stem stores water Spines stop thirsty animals eating the cactus to get water Long roots can find water deep under the soil
3.2 FOOD CHAINS A food chain shows how energy passes from one organism to another, when it makes or eats food. Food chains begin with plants, which use light energy to make food. Plants are producers because they make food.
3.2 FOOD CHAINS Animals are consumers because they eat plants or other animals. A food chain
3.3 HUMANS AND FOOD CHAINS Farmers need land to grow their crops and keep animals. Humans clear land to grow crops. This destroys habitats and harms food chains. Some wild animals can eat and live in the crops that farmers grow.
3.3 HUMANS AND FOOD CHAINS Leaf hoppers eat rice leaves Clearing of land for agriculture
3.3 HUMANS AND FOOD CHAINS Fishing and the introduction of new species can harm food chains.
3.3 HUMANS AND FOOD CHAINS Puffins Possum
3.4 POLLUTION Pollution means adding harmful things to the environment.
3.4 POLLUTION Water pollution Air pollution
3.4 POLLUTION Heat from the Sun reaches the Earth Some heat energy leaves the Earth’s surface and travels back into space Atmosphere, containing carbon dioxide gas Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere stops some of the heat energy escaping from Earth How carbon dioxide warm the Earth
3.5 OZONE DEPLETION Ozone is a gas found in a layer high up in the atmosphere. The ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet radiation from the Sun which can cause skin cancer, eye damage and also damage plants. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are used in air conditioners, refrigerators and aerosol cans.
3.5 OZONE DEPLETION CFCs react with ozone and break it down, creating an ozone hole. CFCs last for a very long time. Scientists think that the CFCs in the atmosphere will stay there for about 100 years. Today, CFC s are banned and the ozone layer is recovering.
3.5 OZONE DEPLETION CFCs cause the thinning of the ozone layer
3.6 CONSERVATION Conservation means looking after the environment so that animals and plants can live there.
