Martial Arts

The word ‘martial’ comes from the Roman god of war named Mars. ‘ Martial Arts ’ means war skills.

Soldiers would learn martial arts so they would know how to fight without weapons.

Martial arts are usually divided into two types: striking (hitting) and grappling (wrestling)

In martial arts competitions, students will fight in friendly matches to see who is better.

Some well known striking martial arts are: kung- fu (from China),

karate (from Japan),

taekwondo (from Korea),

muay T hai kickboxing (from Thailand),

capoeira (from Brazil),

and boxing (from Europe).

In striking martial arts, you are trying to punch ,

kick ,

knee ,

and elbow your opponent

to score points from the judges or referees , or

knock your opponent out ( knockout or K.O. )

You should get out of the way or block your opponent’s strikes, or you’ll get hurt!

Some well known grappling martial arts are judo (from Japan),

Brazilian jiu jitsu (from Brazil),

sambo (from Russia),

and wrestling (from Europe).

By the way, WWE is not real wrestling!!

In grappling martial arts, you are trying to throw ,

pin ,

choke ,

or submit your opponent ( submission ).

With different submission holds, you try to catch your opponent’s leg or arm and try to make them tap out.

When your opponent taps-out , they give up, and you win the match. ( tap out )

In many martial arts, as you get better, you earn belts of different colours . In many martial arts, a black belt is a very high level.

Not everyone who studies a martial art wants to be a fighter.

Some practice martial arts for fitness, or because they enjoy the competition.

Many people who study martial arts want to learn it mostly for self-defense .

Whatever the reason, studying martial arts is a great way to develop confidence, fitness and self-discipline!
