Media Literacy and Information Literacy: Similarities and Differences In recent years there has been growing recognition among educators and policy makers that media literacy and information literacy complement each other, that they are inseparable and hence, have to be handled as one concept.

Media Literacy and Information Literacy: Similarities and Differences The two distinct areas of media literacy and information literacy have thus been combined concept" media and information literacy" (MIL), a unified notion that integrates elements from two literacies.

Media Literacy and Information Literacy: Similarities and Differences UNESCO is at the forefront of the efforts to propogate this unified notion to promote it in schools.

Media Literacy and Information Literacy: Similarities and Differences Much of what is known about media and information literacy (MIL), at this point originates from united Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Media Literacy and Information Literacy: Similarities and Differences It is expected that knowledge about MIL will grow in the years to come as it is adopted in the curriculum and as researchers launch studies about it. Hence in this chapter, we will refer much to UNESCO sources.

The chart below illustrates Similarities and Differences between elements of information literacy and media literacy.

Information literacy emphasizes the importance of access to information and the evaluation and ethical use of such information, Move over, it encompasses technology literacy the use of information and communication technology (ICT) skills, On the other hand, media literacy emphasizes the following abilities to understand media functions, to evaluate how these functions are performed and to rationally engage with Media for self-expression (Wilson et al, 18)

The Unified Concept: Media and Information Literacy The conceptual model of media and information literacy, as proposed by UNESCO, is illustrated in the following chart and explained in the text that follows.

Through MIL citizen will acquire that knowledge skills and attitudes to UNESCO MIL policy Guidelines 13-14);

Ethically and responsibly communicate one's understanding of create knowledge to an audience readership in an appropriate form and medium Be able to apply ICT skills in order to process information and procedure user-generated content and; Engage with Media and other information providers, including those on the internet , for self expression, freedom of expression, intellectual dialogue and democratic participation. Through MIL citizen will acquire that knowledge skills and attitudes to UNESCO MIL policy Guidelines 13-14);
