Definition, characteristics, measurment
APTITUDE
•Aptitude is the natural ability to learn or perform in a
specific area. In other words, it is the aptness or
quickness to succeed in a specific field of activity.
•The word ‘aptitude’ is derived from the Latin word
‘aptos’ which means ‘fitted for’.
•It is a innate capacity of an individual.
Definitions of aptitude
■Bingham (1937) : " Aptitude refers to those qualities characterisinga
person's way of behaviourwhich serve to indicate how will he can
learn to meet and solved a certain specified kinds of problem“.
■Freeman(1971): " An aptitude is a combination of characteristics
indicative of an individual's capacity to acquire (with training) some
specific knowledge skill or set of organized responses such as the
ability to speak a language, to become a musician, to do Mechanical
work "
•Taxler : "Aptitude is a condition, a quality or a set of
qualities in an individual which is indicative of the
probable extent to which he will be able to acquire under
suitable training, some knowledge, skill or composite of
knowledge, understanding and skill ,such as ability to
contribute to art or music mechanical ability
mathematical ability or ability to read and speak foreign
language.
Characteristics
■Aptitude of an individual is constant and it gets perfection
only with training.
■Itis the contribution of both heredity and environment
■Individuals differ in aptitude.
■An individual may have different aptitudes, but he may not
be equally good in all these.
■Aptitude of an individual is constant and it gets perfection

■Aptitude of a person does not indicate his future with
certainty, but it shows only the possibility of success.
Measurement of aptitude
1.General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB)
It is developed by the Employment service bureau of USA.
■It contain 12 tests. 8 of these are paper pencil tests for
computation, vocabulary, arithmetic, reasoning etc. The other 4
require the use of simple equipment in thee shape of movable
pegs on the board, assembling and disassembling rivets and
washers.
■From the score obtained by the subject, the tester is able to
draw inference about the nine aptitude factors namely,
a) General reasoning ability
b) Verbal aptitude
c) Numerical aptitude
d) Spatial aptitude
e) Form perception
f) Motor coordination
g) Finger dexterity
h) Manual dexterity
i) Clerical perception.
The GATB has proved to be kne of the most successfull multiple aptitude
batteries particularly for the purpose of job classification.
2. Differential Aptitude Test Battery(DATB)
Developed by Psychological cooperation of USA, it contains 8 tests designed to test
8 abilities, which are
1) Verbal reasoning
2) Numerical ability
3) Abstract reasoning
4) Space relation
5) Mechanical reasoning
6) Clerical speed and accuracy
7) Language usage-Spelling
8) Language usage – Grammar
3. Test of mechanical aptitude
•J. L Stenquist devised the test.
•The test have been revised and made comprehensive at
University of Minnesota and now they are known as
Minnesota mechanical assembly test.
•Test was designed to measure mechanical aptitude covering
the range from children in lower grade through adulthood.
