Computer networking refers to
interconnected computing
devices that can exchange data
and share resources with each
other. These networked devices
use a system of rules, called
communications protocols, to
transmit information over
physical or wireless
technologies.

❖Local Area Networks (LANs)
1.Short distances.
2. Designed to provide local interconnectivity.
❖Personal Area Networks (PANs)
1. short-range wireless networks that work over a range of tens of metres.
2. Typical PAN technologies include: Cordless products such as mouse devices and keyboards.
❖Wide Area Networks (WANs)
1. Long distances.
2. Provide connectivity over large areas.
❖Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
1. Provide connectivity over areas such as a city, a campus.
Computer network is mainly of four types:

Three criteria necessary for an effective and efficient network. These
are:

What is the Protocol in
Computer Network?
3/2/2023 8
Some Network Protocol
1.Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
2.Internet Protocol (IP)
3.User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
4.Post office Protocol (POP)
5.Simple mail transport Protocol (SMTP)
6.File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
7.Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
8.Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)
9.Telnet
10.Gopher

The Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI) model describes seven layers
that computer systems use to
communicate over a network. It was
the first standard model for network
communications.
