MASLOW’S THEORY OF MOTIVATION

•Maslow’s theory of motivation explains the different levels of human needs that drive our
behaviour
•This framework starts from the most basic physiological needs to the highest level of self
actualisation
•It suggests that people are motivated by 5 basic categories of needs:
•Physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and self actualisation

•Physiological: The most fundamental requirements for human survival such as air, water, food, sleep, shelter.
These are the basic biological needs that the body requires to function properly so that they can work efficiently.
•Safety needs: This includes physical safety such as security, stability, protection from harm. Fulfilling these needs
allow people to feel secure and comfortable.
•Belongingness and needs: This includes the desire for meaningful relationships, social connections and the
sense of acceptance and inclusion with in a group.
•Esteem needs: This includes both self esteem and the esteem of others. Self esteem is the respect and
confidence we have in ourselves, while the esteem of others involves feeling respected by others.
•Self actualisation needs: It includes the desire to become the best version of one self and to fulfill one’s full
potential. This involves finding meaning, purpose and personal growth.
