PRESENTATION ON ETHICAL RESEARCH PAPER Presented by Dr. Hafiz Salman Saeed

A Cross Sectional Study On Patient Satisfaction During Physician Patient Communication At Independent University Hospital Faisalabad

Objectives Introduction Methodology Results Discussion Conclusion References

Introduction Physician empathy is at the heart of doctor-patient communication and significantly influences patient outcomes. (Zhang et al .,2023). Effective communication in physician-patient relationships predicts patient outcomes such as satisfaction with care. ( Haskard-Zolnierek et al .,2023).

Cont …. Poor communication between physicians and patients can lead to a decline in the quality of care, and it increases in the financial burden placed on the patient, including treatment-related charges and expenditures.( Nimmon et al.,2018 ).

Cont … Good physician-patient communication results in a number of positive health outcomes. Extensive evidence demonstrates that patients who communicate effectively with their doctors are more likely to acknowledge their health problems. Despite the benefits, there are a number of barriers to physician-patient communication, including lack of communication training and thus a lack of skills, and physicians discouraging collaboration with the patient. ( Dalma et al.,2020).

Cont … In a medical institution, the treatment of diseases starts with communication between doctors and patients; interactions between doctors and patients take place through communication. A doctor comes to infer a patient’s disease status through the patient’s explanations. Accordingly, effective communication between doctors and patients can be seen as important to enable accurate diagnoses and treatments. (Dang BN et al., 2017).

The simple Random Sampling Technique used and sample size 103 of this study. The results are P-values are less than 0.05 and there is an association between two attributes.

Discussion The aim of this study was to synthesize current literature on physician empathy, with a focus on investigating how physician empathy was delivered and how it influenced patient outcomes as well as other aspects of doctor-patient communication.

Cont … Three broad themes have been identified: ( 1) physicians’ empathic expressions; ( 2) patient outcomes (patient functional status, patient safety, and patient satisfaction ) (3) empathy enhancing doctor-patient communication. This paper summarized the positive effects of physician empathy on patient outcomes.

Conclusion P hysician empathy is the significance value of doctor- patient communication. Three themes were identified : (1) physicians’ empathic expressions; (2) patient outcomes (patient functional status, patient safety, and patient satisfaction); (3) empathy enhancing doctor-patient communication. This study highlights the importance and value of physician empathy in doctor-patient communication, implying more training programs enhancing the doctors’ empathic communication skills should be put into practice.
