Nidra In Samhitas

Etymology Ni+Dra+Aung=Nidra Synonyms Charaka-Bhutadhatri Susrutha-Vaishmnavi,Maya Amarkosha-shyanam,svapah,svapnam

Definition Acharya charaka-Charaka affirmed that when the mind (as well as soul) gets exhausted or becomes inactive and the sensory and motor organs become inactive then the individual gets sleep. Acharya susruta-Sushruta described the sleep occurs when the Hridaya the seat of Chetana is covered by Tamas. Acharya vagbhata-Vagbhata stated that the Manovaha Strotas become accumulated with Shleshma and mind is devoid of sense organs because of fatigue,when individual falls asleep.

Mechanism of Nidra Exhaustion of mind and senses Unable to perceive the knowledge of corresponding sense organ dissociation between atma ,manas and indriya यदा तु मनसि क्लान्ते कर्मात्मानः क्लमान्विताः [ १ ] | विषयेभ्यो निवर्तन्ते तदा स्वपिति मानवः || ३५ | | (cha.su.21/35) निद्रा

Kapha dosha encircle the srotas Sense organs are fatigued due to excess work निद्रा

When seat of chetana(hridaya) get subdued by tamoguna निद्रा

Types of Nidra 1. Tamobhava-caused by tamas 2.sleshmasamudbhava-caused by (vitiated)kapha 3&4.manasarirasramasambhava-caused by mental exertion and physical exhaustion 5.agantuki-indicative of bad prognosis leading to imminent death 6.vyadhyanuvartini-caused as a complication of other diseases like sannipata jwara etc 7.raatriswabhava-caused by the very nature of the night (physiological sleep)

According to vagbhata 1.kalaswabhava-it is produces at the accustomed time. i.e. nights 2.aamayajanya-it is produced due to effect of diseases 3.chittakedajanya-when mana is exhausted 4.dehakedajanya-when body is exhausted 5.kaphajanya-t is produced due to predominance of kapha 6.ahunthuja-his type of Nidra is produced by external factors e.g. traumatic etc 7.tamobhavaja-it is produced by predominance of Tamoguna

Functions of sleep Provide : 1 Bala (strength) 2 Varna(complexion) 3 Upachaya (growth) for whole life span
