PRESENTATIONS A DAUNTING TASK!?
SPEAKING IN PUBLIC SCARES YOU? YOU ARE NOT ALONE SURVEYS HAVE SHOWN THAT SPEAKING TO AN AUDIENCE REGULARLY TOPS THE LIST OF PEOPLE’S FEARS -MORE THAN FLYING, HEIGHTS OR DYING
Statistics
DON’T WORRY!
THE 3 PRESENTATION ESSENTIALS Use Visual Aids Rehearse The audience will remember only 3 messages
VISUAL AIDS Twice as likely to achieve your goals Use VISUALS (pictures, Tables, props) whenever you can. Speech is only 38% of the communication
MEMORABLE PRESENTATION Visual slides have a staggering effect on message retention. “A picture is worth a thousand words”
REHEARSAL “If you fail to prepare, you are prepared to fail” Rehearsing can make a difference between a good and an average presentation. You should rehearse at least 4 times. At least Once in front of an audience (friends, family, colleagues, children etc)
REHEARSAL (2) Practise your presentation against the clock Allow extra time for questions Watch out for nerves (they may result in you talking faster than normally) Video or tape record yourself-It gives you immediate feedback REHEARSE AND YOU WILL GET BETTER!
The rule of THREE A technique as old as Aristotle People tend to remember lists of THREEs-Structure your presentation around threes and it will be more memorable. The chances are that the audience will remember only 3 things from your presentation.
The rule of THREE (2) Decide beforehand which THREE messages you want your audience to remember. Structure the main part of your presentation around three key themes and see how they can be better illustrated.
The rule of THREE (3) There are THREE parts in your presentation Beginning: Ideal for an attention grabber Main Body: Develop your ideas Ending: Ideal for wrapping things up. Use lists of three whenever you can in your presentation. Examples: Veni , Vidi , Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) – Julius Caesar** “ Friends, Romans, Countrymen lend me your ears” – W. Shakespeare “Our priorities are Education, Education, Education ” – Tony Blair A Mars a day helps you to work, rest and play – Advertising slogan Stop, look and listen – Public safety announcement
Extra TIPS Lean forward to make a point Don’t read your slides Don’t write everything on screen Try to make 1 key point per slide Engage the audience using humour , telling a story etc. Keep it short. Vary your pace and pitch. Practise , practise , practise !
