Sweetness of imaan

The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else. 2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake. 3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire.”

What is this sweetness? Ibn Rajab ( raḥimahullāh ) writes, “ Īmān has a flavour and a sweetness which is tasted by the heart just as the sweetness of food and drink is tasted by the mouth; for indeed īmān is the sustenance of the hearts, just as food and drink are the sustenance of the body.”

Sins: A Barrier to Tasting the Sweetness of Iman Sins deprive us of tasting the sweetness of īmān and worship. The more sweetness and joy we find in sinning, the less joy and sweetness we find in worshipping Allah. When we are sick, we do not enjoy the taste of food. Sometimes we cannot even taste the flavour of the food. If we are feeling nauseous, even the most expensive meal would not entice us to eat. Likewise, if our hearts are sick and diseased due to committing sins and following desires, we cannot enjoy the ‘sweetness of īmān ’.

Iman has a taste. Our understanding of a taste will depend on what we have tasted. Will a person who from birth hasn’t tasted anything sweet understanding sweetness? We have been deceived by the world. We feel that we have achieved something. Some taste wealth, some leisures , some haraam and feel like I have everything. A person who knows the reality of this world will feel sorry for this person. Because we haven’t tasted the sweetness of Iman we are happy with where we are.

The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else. When true love is in the heart, then health, wealth, time, feelings, aspirations etc , everything will be sacrificed for the beloved. We see this for Haram love in this world. A person has an illicit beloved and due to that will turn against parents, halaal spouse, will discard children, lose wealth. All this for the sake of haraam love. When Allah’s love and the love for Nabi ﷺ enters the heart, a person will be willing to do anything and everything for them.

Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake. To taste the sweetness of Iman we need to have hearts filled with love for every believer. Nabi ﷺ' s love extended to every human and even to animals. We take the example of Wahshi R.A. He was responsible for killing and mutilating the body of Hamza R.A , the beloved uncle of Nabi ﷺ. Sahabah mention that seeing the body of his uncle filled Nabi ﷺ with grief.

وَأَنْ يَكْرَهَ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي الْكُفْرِ كَمَا يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُقْذَفَ فِي النَّارِ ‏"‏‏ Who hates to revert to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into the fire. One is to hate disbelief, the other is to hate the actions of disbelief. When we get this we will realize what we were missing sitting on that leaf. Ibnul Qayyim on controlling the gaze It fills the heart with happiness, joy and delight that is far greater than the happiness attained from looking at haram. The enjoyment of abstaining is greater than the enjoyment of the sin.
