What exactly is a Non-Governmental Organization? Also known as NGO’s Corporations created by people that run independently from any form of government Could be non-profit, or for-profit, but exclude government reps from joining Examples: BRAC, Salvation army, Partners in Health, American Red Cross
Goal of a NGO To provide emergency assistance such as aid and relief to disaster victims. For example, the Salvation Army administers assistance by providing food and water, shelter, medical assistance, missing person services, etc. to the victims.
Types of Non-Governmental Organizations Community-based Organizations: responsibility taken on by the people in the community to help the poor Citywide Organizations: different community agencies, business affiliations, ethnic or educational groups, etc. National NGOs: national organizations (like the Red Cross) that provide aid to people International NGOs: responsible for funding local NGOs and carry out projects on the international level.
NGO’s Roles in a Disaster For example, if a hurricane or some other natural disaster hit the United States, these NGO’s would: Distribute food, water, and clothing Provide radio communication services to the different governments and voluntary agencies Provide shelter to the disaster victims Administer first aid and help with medical supplies Provide transportation, home repairs, counseling, and clean up
The American Red Cross The American Red Cross is one of the most well-known agencies dealing with emergency assistance for disaster victims. Nationwide network Over a million volunteers On top of disaster relief, they also provide community service, communication services, the collection and distribution of blood to hospitals, education programs, and even international relief.

These organizations will provide victims and the area they live in with disaster mitigation, management, and recovery.
