Engineering Material 9 Materials in this group are composed of one or more metallic elements (such as iron, aluminum, copper, titanium, gold, and nickel), and often also nonmetallic elements (for example, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen) in relatively small amounts .

Engineering Material 13 Stiffness is an indicator of the tendency for an element to return to its original form after being subjected to a force . Or a material’s resistance to elastic deformation Strength measures how much stress can be applied to an element before it deforms permanently or fractures. Hardness measures a material’s resistance to surface deformation. For some metals, like steel, hardness and tensile strength are roughly proportional (see ASTM A 370-68 Steel Tables). Toughness is the ability of a material to absorb energy and plastically deform without fracturing. One definition of material toughness is the amount of energy per unit volume that a material can absorb before rupturing. It is also defined as a material's resistance to fracture when stressed.
