FARKHANDA ANDRABI Msc NURSING 1 ST YEAR Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative ( BFHI ), also known as Baby Friendly Initiative ( BFI ), is a worldwide programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF ), launched in 1992 in India [1] [2] following the adoption of the Innocenti Declaration on breastfeeding promotion in 1990 . The initiative is a global effort for improving the role of maternity services to enable mothers to breastfeed babies for the best start in life . It aims at improving the care of pregnant women, mothers and newborns at health facilities that provide maternity services for protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding
UNICEF, WHO, and many national government health agencies recommend that babies are breastfed exclusively for their first six months of life. The BFHI aims to increase the numbers of babies who are exclusively breastfed worldwide, a goal which the WHO estimates could contribute to avoiding over a million child deaths each year, and potentially many premature maternal deaths as well . The core purpose of the BFHI is to ensure that mothers and newborns receive timely and appropriate care before and during their stay in a facility providing maternity and newborn services, to enable the establishment of optimal feeding of newborns, which promotes their health and development.
The first few days of a newborn’s life are not only critical for the child, but also an important window for providing mothers with the support they need to breastfeed successfully. UNICEF and WHO launched the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative to encourage health facilities worldwide to better support breastfeeding . The initiative developed the following Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding to promote optimal clinical care for new mothers and their infants. There is substantial evidence that implementing the Ten Steps significantly improves breastfeeding rates.
TEN STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING Every facility providing maternity services and care for newborn infants should : 1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff . 2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy. 3 . Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding . 4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth.
5 . Show mothers how to breastfeed, and how to maintain lactation even if they should be separated from their infants . 6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk unless medically indicated . 7. Practise rooming in - allow mothers and infants to remain together - 24 hours a day . 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants . 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers
PARENTING PROCESS
PARENTING PROCESS Parenting , the process of raising children and providing them with protection and care in order to ensure their healthy development into adulthood . It involves equipping children with social and emotional skills that enable them to manage their emotions and make better decisions Parenting is also known as child-rearing or child upbringing 3 . Parents are often the first social contact a child makes. They not only influence the child but also have the maximum control over them.
Parenting or child rearing is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, financial, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from the biological relationship . It has been suggested that parenting is the hardest job any person will ever have. It also seems to be the job ,a person is least prepared to begin with . Becoming a parent means the lives are changing and must prepare for those changes. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF A CHILD’S ENTERANCE IN A FAMILY:
BENEFITS OF PARENTING Healthy attachment : Children who grow up with a secure and healthy attachment to their parents stand a better chance of developing happy and content relationships with others in their life. They also learn to regulate emotions under stress and in difficult situations Positive social behaviors : Positive parenting techniques help children show positive and confident social behaviors, which helps them create a positive social image. Healthy parent involvement and intervention in the child’s day-to-day life lay the foundation for better social and academic skills Problem-solving skills : Children gain strong problem-solving skills when they have a positive relationship with their parents
Self-esteem : Constant encouragement by parents and motivation helps children build their confidence and self-esteem. They feel their actions are being watched and liked by their parents, and this generates the feeling of self-worth. Better mental health : Harvard scientists found that positive parenting has long-term benefits, including better relationships, mental health, and well-being during adulthood
