Trivia According to the study done by the National Youth Commission (NYC), 2 out of 5 Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old, smoke cigarettes (philstar.com, March 16, 2012). Across the world, every six seconds, someone dies from using tobacco. Tobacco kills up to half of its users and it kills nearly six million people each year. (WHO Philippines, 10 July 2017)

Cigarette Smoking Tobacco is a tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central America, but now cultivated throughout the world “Nicotiana tabacum” or sometimes called “common tobacco” is preferred for producing present day cigarettes. Cigarette is a cylindrical rolled paper containing dried and shredded tobacco leaves

Trivia Each time a person puffs a cigarette or chew tobacco, more than 4,000 chemicals come into his/her contact. In studies conducted, 43 of these chemicals are known carcinogens. Nicotine, the addictive drug found in tobacco products like cigarettes is a poisonous stimulant.

Types of Smoke MAINSTREAM Smoke - smoke that is inhaled into the smoker’s mouth and lungs. Toxic ingredients enter the body directly in the mouth Second-Hand Smoke - a mixture of the smoke coming from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke exhaled by the smoker; more harmful because the smoke is not filtered Third-Hand Smoke -residue from cigarette smoke found in clothes, furniture, and other surfaces after the cigarette has been put out

Effects of smoking in the body

Policies and Laws Regarding Cigarette Smoking RA No. 9211 ( The Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003) - the law governing tobacco production, distribution, and use Section 5 (Smoking Ban in Public Places) - schools, recreational activities for minors, elevators and stairways, gas stations, hospitals, medical clinics and laboratories, airports, terminals, restaurants and food preparation areas

Section 9 (Minimum Age Sales) Unlawful to sell to any minor Unlawful to purchase cigarettes from a minor Unlawful for a minor to sell and buy cigarettes Unlawful for a minor to smoke cigarettes or any tobacco products

Section 10- Sale of Tobacco Products within School Perimeters - Sale of tobacco products is prohibited within one hundred meters from any point of the perimeter of a school, public playground or other facility frequented particularly by minors

Effects of alcohol drinking Intoxication Happens when the alcohol goes into the bloodstream, producing physical and mental changes in the body. Hangover The occurrence of an uncomfortable feeling after getting intoxicated Cirrhosis - A liver disease, liver is stored with fats that can block the flow of blood inside the liver

Blood- alcohol concentration Measures the amount of alcohol that entered in the bloodstream at a certain period A BAC of 0.05 percent means there is 5 parts of alcohol per 10,000 parts of the blood in the body A 0.3- 0.5 percent BAC could lead to coma, brain damages, and death

Myths about alcohol Myths Fact 1. Alcohol gives extra energy. It has very low nutritional content and it has empty calories. 2. Alcohol boost self- esteem. It is a depressant; it can slow down the function of the central nervous system 3. Coffee can make you sober after drinking alcohol. Coffee is a stimulant. You can only have a drunk- awake person. 4. Can cure snake bites. Not yet proven.

How to prevent? Only the person can help himself. Have the courage to refuse the temptation of alcohol consumption.
