Principles of Democracy

Popular Sovereignty Rule by the people Consent to be governed Authority of government comes from the people The people create the government and run it

Rule of Law The law is what rules the land Everyone is accountable to the law, including members of the government

Federalism Power is divided and shared between the National and State/local governments Federalism allows a government to look over the whole country and a government to look over local matters

Separation of Powers Each branch of government - Executive - Legislative - Judicial has their own responsibilities. This distributes the power . Avoids the government from becoming too powerful

Checks and Balances Each branch has some control over the other . No branch can exercise their power without approval from another branch

Judicial Review The Supreme Court can declare laws and/or actions of the government as unconstitutional Established by Marbury v. Madison

Limited Government The power of the government is limited. The Bill of Rights is an example of how the government’s power is limited.
