Probability in Mmathematics

Slide Content

Let’s think! What are the possible outcomes if we choose one marble? Imagine the bag of marbles holds pink, yellow and green marbles.

PERMUTATION MATHS PRESENTATION

What is a chance experiment? A chance experiment is when you do something, like pulling a marble from the bag, and you don't know what the outcome will be.

What about Outcomes? There could be different possibilities or outcomes, and each one has a chance of happening.

Let’s think! What are the possible outcomes if we choose one marble? Imagine the bag of marbles holds pink, yellow and green marbles.

Possible outcomes = yellow, green or pink

HERE’s AnOTHER What are the possible outcomes if we roll it once? Imagine we roll a dice.

Possible outcomes = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6

NOT EQUALLY LIKELY Outcomes can be: The chance of an outcome occurring is the same for all outcomes. EQUALLY LIKELY The chance of an outcome occurring is different for each outcome.

Let’s tRY! Imagine we are going to spin this spinner. The possible outcomes = yellow, white, pink or green. All outcomes are EQUALLY LIKELY because each coloured section of the spinner is the same size (one quarter).

what about this time? The possible outcomes are still yellow, white, pink or green. The outcomes are NOT EQUALLY LIKELY because the pink-coloured section is larger than the other coloured sections.

DEFINITION Chance Probability add add

BRAINSTORM What words can be used when discussing chance and probability? Brainstorm below:

It will rain today. Defintely Maybe Impossible You will go on a bus. Probably Unlikely Definitely You will sleep tonight. Impossible Likely Probably You will have a drink. Unlikely Impossible Probably ACTIVITY Think about the probability of the following happening today and select the correct word:

Heads Tails Tally the information Graph the data Heads Tails Choose 'heads' or tails'. Flip a coin 5 times and record the data below. Repeat the same experiment then compare and discuss the results: HEADS OR TAILS?

1 2 3 4 5 6 ROLL A DIE Roll a six-sided die five times and tabulate the results below.

Discuss your results with your neighbour. Were your results the same? Why / why not? How were they different? Why were they different? QUESTIONS

What chance is there of getting a purple gumball? What chance is there of getting a yellow gumball? How likely is it you will get a purple gumball?

What chance is there of getting a purple gumball? What chance is there of getting a yellow gumball? How likely is it you will get a yellow gumball?

CHANCE EXPERIMENTS MATHS QUIZ PRESENTATION

NOT EQUALLY LIKELY The chance of an outcome occurring is the same for all outcomes. EQUALLY LIKELY The chance of an outcome occurring is different for each outcome. REMEMBER:

PERMUTATION

Which of the following scenarios does not have equally likely outcomes?

What is the chance of choosing a dark blue marble? 3 out of 10 3 out of 5 2 out of 10

What is the chance of choosing a dark blue marble? 3 out of 10 3 out of 5 2 out of 10

Colour Frequency Blue 6 Yellow 8 Orange 3 Total 20 Using the frequency table, which outcome is most likely to occur? Blue Yellow Orange

ARE YOU READY FOR A CHALLENGE?

Colour Frequency Dark Blue 7 Light Blue 3 Orange 10 Total 20 Using the frequency table, estimate how many times we might spin dark blue if we spun it 100 times? 20 7 35
