ORAL CAVITY The oral cavity is the first part of the digestive tract. It contains the mouth, teeth, gums, the bony roof (hard/ soft palate), the floor of the mouth (under the tongue), and cheeks (buccal mucosa). The main  function  is to begin the process of digestion. FUNCTION The oral cavity represents the first part of the digestive tube. Its primary function is to serve as the entrance of the alimentary tract and to initiate the digestive process by salivation and propulsion of the alimentary bolus into the  pharynx . 11-02-2023 3

Problem associated in oral cavity 1. Gum disease As an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth, gum disease is one of the top causes of tooth loss among adults. A lack of brushing and flossing can lead to gum disease . 11-02-2023 4

2. Cavities Cavities are created by bacteria in your mouth that feast on the sugar and starch left on your teeth after meals . After eating these carbohydrates , the bacteria produce an acid waste product that dissolves tooth enamel, resulting in holes in your teeth called cavities. 11-02-2023 5

3. Bad breath Many people have persistent bad breath they can’t seem to get rid of. The cause ? A dental problem like gum disease , cavities, or dry mouth can actually create this bad breath. 4. Oral cancer Oral cancer is an extremely serious , deadly disease. However , it is often highly curable if it’s caught and treated in the early stages . That’s why visiting the dentist every six months is crucial. He will check your mouth, lips, and throat for any cancer signs. 11-02-2023 7

5. Receding gum line When your gums recede from your teeth, the roots of those teeth are exposed, which means anything hot or cold that even slightly touches that exposed area causes extreme pain. See your dentist for help if you’re experiencing serious tooth sensitivity. 11-02-2023 8

6. Mouth sores One of the most painful and annoying types of mouth sores is the canker sore . It’s often caused by stress , and it can take up to 12 days to go away . However, there are over the counter products you can put on the sore to relieve some of the pain. 11-02-2023 9

7. Yellow teeth Many people often complain about the yellowish shade of their teeth without realizing that drinks like red wine and coffee are major teeth stainers .
