INVERTED NIPPLES Flat or small nipples It can make latching difficult Nipple becomes sore as the neonate sucks on the nipple
SORE NIPPLE Nipples become sore when the neonate suckles on them Nipples can also get sore due to frequent washing with soap or pulling the neonate off the breast while still sucking
BREAST ENGORGEMENT Breasts can get engorged if the feeding is delayed or infrequent or if the neonate cannot feed due to incorrect positioning and attachment Engorged breast are different from the full breasts which are heavy but not warm, hard, or tender
BREAST ABSCESS Breast abscess formation can occur if there is an engorged breast, cracked nipple, blocked duct, or mastitis is not treated in early stages
NOT ENOUGH MILK There could be several reasons for insufficient milk Incorrect method of breast feeding Supplementary or bottle feeding No night breast feeding Engorgement of the breast Maternal illness Stress Tiredness
EXPRESSED BREAST MILK (EBM) Neonate can receive expressed breast milk or own mothers milk EBM can be stored for 6-8 hours at room temperature, 24 hours in refrigerator, and 3-6 months in freezer at 20 C
