PROJECTILE MOTION

Projectile is an object with an initial horizontal velocity that is thrown and affected by the force of gravity

KEY CONCEPT: Projectile motion is a combination of vertical motion and horizontal motion

Trajectory is the curved path followed by the projectile

Vx = initial horizontal velocity dx = maximum horizontal distance dy = maximum height

Horizontal distance traveled d x = v x t whwre v x = d x t

Maximum height of projectile d y = -gt 2 2 t = d x v x

Sample Problem A ball is thrown horizontally out of the window with a velocity of 3.5 m/s. If the window is 5.0 m above the ground, how far will the ball travel before it hits the ground?

Sample Problem An orange rolls across a table with a speed of 1.4 m/s and falls off the edge. If it lands 2.0 m from the edge of the table, from what height does it fall?

Sample Problem A gardener holds a hose 0.75 m above the ground such that the water shoots out horizontally and hits the ground at a point 2.0 m away. What is the speed with which the water leaves the hose?

Sample Problem A gardener holds a hose 0.75 m above the ground such that the water shoots out horizontally and hits the ground at a point 2.0 m away. What is the speed with which the water leaves the hose?

Seatwork A little girl throws her jackstone ball out of the window with a velocity of 6 m/s. If the window is 3 m above the ground level, then how far from the house will the ball land?

Seatwork A package is dropped from a helicopter flying at a height of 7.5 m while traveling 15 m/s. How far does the package travel horizontally before it hits the ground below?
