Topic : Propagation of climbers and creepers
Climbers
•Climbers are defined as a plant which
possesses special structures to climb over a
support.
• These special structures may be hook-hike
thorns.
•Climbers are very important ornamental plants
and are commonly used on walls, arches and
pergolas for the purpose of screening.
PROPAGATION
The climbing plants can be propagated by
following methods viz, seeds, cuttings, layering,
suckers, tubers etc.
Seed:
Most of annuals climbers like Clitoria,
Ipomoea purpurea, Aristolochia grandiflora, A.
elegans, Asparagus racemosus are usually grown
directly from seeds.
Suckers: These are the plant parts which arise
from the base of the mother plants. These are
separated from mother plants along with roots
and planted directly in the field.
E.g Rangoon creeper.
Root cuttings:
Root cutting is prepared by taking 7-8cm long
pieces of roots having 5 mm diameter and
planted horizontally 3-5 cm deep in nursery bed
or pot.
Tubers:
Some of the climbers are propagated by
underground storage stems like tubers.
E.g Gloriosasuperba.
Stem cuttings:
Shoots or branches of the plant are used to
produce new plants. Most of ornamental climber
are multiplied by stem cuttings of several types
depending upon maturity of wood.
Hardwood cutting:
These are the climbers propagated by cuttings of
more than one season’s old wood.
e.g. Rangoon Creeper, Sandpaper vine,
Bougainvillea and clerodendron.
Softwood cutting:
These are the climbers which are propagated
from cuttings of current year’s growth.
e.g. Bougainvillea, moneyplant,
Monsteradeliciosa, Thunbergia grandiflora,
LAYERING
•Layering is a process in which root is initiated
in a shoot which is still attached to mother
plant and then this rooted plant is separated
and planted to grow as a new plant.
•Climbers are mainly propagated by ground and
air layering.
AIR LAYERING
Air layering:
It is also known as Gootee. In this method the
stem is girdled and then rooting paste is applied
to this stem and finally it is covered with moist
sphagnum moss and tied with polythene film and
allowed to grow. After few weeks when rooting
occurs the plant is separated from mother plant
and planted.
Selection of climbers
For sunny situation:
➢Phyrostegia venusta, Quisqualis indica,
Antigonon leptopus, Adenocalymma alliaceum,
Bougainvillea sp., Campsis grandiflora etc.
For Partial shade
➢Clerodendron splendens, Lonicera japonica
Climbers for pots
➢Bougainvillea, Clitoria ternatea.
Heavy climbers
They cover large area and are suitable for
covering bigger area.
e.g. Antigonon leptopus, Bignonia magnifica,
Bougainvillea sp., Quisqualis indica, Pyrostegia
venusta, Clerodendron splendens.
Light climbers
These climbers are suitable for limited spaces
e.g. Lonicera japonica, Clitoria ternatea.
