Matter Properties of

matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up a space.

The mas of an object is the amount of matter the object contains. Vs.

Everything is made up of matter. However, materials may differ in terms of the kind of matter they contain. One of particular kind of matter, with the chemical name SUCROSE .

Matter that has a uniform and definite composition is called substance .

substance Also referred to as pure substances, contain only one kind of matter.

Is not a substance, because not all samples of lemonade is identical.

All samples of substance have identical physical properties . Is a quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s composition.

substances Pure

Everything that exists in the earth is a form of a matter which is further defined as  any substance that occupies space and has mass.  The matter is further divided into various forms such as solid , liquid and gas . Apart from these, it is also classified as  pure substances and mixtures .

States of matter

Particles are constantly moving (even in solids!), there are spaces between particles, and the speed of particle motion increases with temperature.

Particles are tightly Packed Particles are closed together but can move Particles are far-apart, can move

REVIEW: PARTICLES What are the basic units that make up all matter according to the particle model?

REVIEW: How does the movement and arrangement of these particles affect the ; SOLID LIQUID GAS

Pure substances are further classified as; ELEMENTS COMPOUND

ELEMENTS *Elements constitute the simplest chemical substances in which all the atoms are exactly the same . *a substance that consists of only one type or kind of atom.

Pure substances are further classified as; ELEMENTS COMPOUND

are chemical substances made up of two or more elements that are chemically bound together in a fixed ratio. COMPOUND

H O O ELEMENTS HYDROGEN OXYGEN (O 2 ) COMPOUND H O O WATER H 2 O

Na Cl ELEMENTS SODIUM CHLORIDE COMPOUND Na Cl SALT SODIUM CHLORIDE

PAIR-WORK WHICH SHOWS ELEMENT AND COMPOUND?

K inetic M olecular T heory

Kinetic molecular theory states that  gas particles are in constant motion and exhibit perfectly elastic collisions .
