AND HYDROPONICS
THE AZTECS

The Aztec civilization
Also known as the Mexica, flourished in Mesoamerica between the 14th
and 16th centuries. This indigenous group settled in the Valley of Mexico,
in a region that would later become the heart of the Aztec Empire. Two
key aspects to understand the greatness of this civilization are its
geographical location and its impressive capital, Tenochtitlán.
Geographic location:
The Aztecs chose to settle on an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of
Mexico, surrounded by fertile lands and mountains. This strategic location
offered significant benefits, such as accessibility to aquatic resources,
fertile land for agriculture, and a natural defensive position.

Development of
Advanced
Techniques:
The Aztecs implemented sophisticated
agricultural techniques, such as crop rotation
and the use of organic waste as fertilizers. The
construction of the chinampas allowed
efficient and productive agriculture,
contributing to the food self-sufficiency of the
population and the development of a complex
society.

Chinampas were floating
farming platforms built on Lake
Texcoco and other bodies of
water in the Valley of Mexico.
The Aztecs created these
structures using reeds, mud
and earth, forming rectangular
platforms that emerged from
the water. These platforms
were delimited by channels,
allowing the controlled flow of
water.

Highlighting its sustainability and efficiency:
Use of organic waste to fertilize:
The chinampas stood out for their sustainability and efficiency in food
production. By building on water, they took advantage of the lake's
rich sediments and natural nutrients. Furthermore, being surrounded
by water, the chinampas were resistant to pests and allowed efficient
irrigation control, optimizing crop growth.
The Aztecs implemented a circular production system by using
organic waste, such as plant remains, mud, and human and animal
excrement, to fertilize the chinampas. This sustainable approach not
only provided essential nutrients for crops, but also contributed to
the cleanliness of the canals, maintaining a balance in the aquatic
ecosystem.

This comparison between Aztec chinampas
and modern hydroponics highlights the
evolution of agricultural practices,
highlighting the continued importance of
optimizing resource use in food production.
Both practices share a focus on the efficient
use of water and nutrients. While chinampas
relied on the natural capacity of bodies of
water, hydroponics uses modern
technologies to provide a precise and
controlled aqueous solution.
