Mr. John Coleman is 19 years old. He has lost both his parents and now lives alone with his younger brother Michael. He complains of continuous tiredness and is unable to sleep. He eats way too much junk food and never cooks. The kitchen seems to be untouched. He is extremely thin and just does not gain any weight. Although good-looking he suffers from major acne problems all over his body. He watched TV all day and rarely goes out. His eyes appear swollen and strained. He rarely takes a shower and tends to wear the same clothes day in and day out. His house looks like a total dump yard but John seems least bothered. If questioned he replies, Its my life let me live it my way.
The story: J ohn’s father was a raging alcoholic, they came from a middle class family. Due to the recession he lost his job. They had very little saving but Johns mother would some how make ends meet for she loved her two sons very much . Seeing the family’s condition, John dropped out of college and took up a job, he worked for a small newspaper where in he wrote articles etc… because he was very good at E nglish. John’s father would go out every night and return home drunk and beat his mother brutally. For he had no control over what he was doing at those moments. John couldn't ’ t take it anymore and one night when his father hit his mother and she tumbled down the stairs hit her head and died. In anger John attacked his father and choked him to death.
Major problems with John: Lost both his parents Continuous tiredness Unable to sleep Eats too much junk food He is very thin Suffers from acne all over his body Watches TV all day His eyes appear swollen and strained Rarely goes out Rarely takes a shower Tends to wear the same clothes House is a complete mess Stubborn attitude
What seems to be wrong with John? A ccording to us John is undergoing depression due to the loss of both his parents. His parents passed away in the near past and John is going through a very difficult time. He is left alone to look after not only himself but also his younger brother .
He portrays various symptoms of depression like: continuous tiredness Lack of sleep He could’ve developed food craving specially junk food which are high in carbs Another reason for eating junk food could be that he has never cooked or that ‘the kitchen and cooking’ reminded him of his mother He has lost a lot of weight and is now too thin because he isn’t eating well.
Cont.. He stays indoors because he is trying to avoid confrontation He has lost interest in daily activities and displays symptoms of loss of energy. He seems to be having a very bleak outlook towards life, at his point he probably feels that there is nothing any one can do to make it better. Hence the last line “It is my life let me live it my way”
What could be the major health issue with John? John is going through depression and everything that is happening to him is because of the way he is currently living his life. Eating unhealthy food will worsen his situation. His blood pressure could increase he will become prone to heart diseases if he continues at this rate. His eyes appear to be swollen and strained due to the adverse amounts of TV he has been watching and the acute lack of sleep . Keeping his house in a mess increases the risk of rodents in the house again increasing the bacteria around him.
Illnesses that he probably has and why: He is suffering from insomnia: Lack of sleep can cause some of the same symptoms as depression -- extreme tiredness, loss of energy, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Distress can disturb the body's internal balance or equilibrium, leading to physical symptoms such as head aches, an upset stomach and high blood pressure all of which he probably has . John also probably has stomach ulcers
