What is Public Communication
·Public communication is a strategic communication used
when a person or group of people share information to a
group of people to deliver a message on a specific topic. It
is one of the crucial forms of communication, usually done
for a specific purpose. (Bhasin , 2021) such as Public
speaking events, newspaper editorials and billboard
advertisements are a few forms of public communication.
(Beebe, S. and Beebe S. 2019).

What is Public Communication
Public communication is a sender-focused form of
communication in which one person is typically responsible
for conveying information to an audience

Public Communication in your life
Public speaking can be a powerful tool for an effective speaker
who wishes to present with information not known
previously.
Public speaking skills are important for success in school,
career advancement, and for increasing self-confidence.

Types of Public Communications
1. Ceremonial
The ceremonial communications consist of speeches that mark special
occasions like graduations, weddings, birthday parties, and many more. An
emotional connection with a personal touch will be present here.
2. Demonstrative
Demonstrative Communications require an option to speak
concisely and clearly about actions. Behind demonstrative
communication, the idea lies that the audience should leave
learning about how to accomplish something.

3. Informative
With informative communication, the speaker tries to disclose an idea to
the public. College lectures include informative speeches like industry
conferences and some officials conveying important information. In this type of
communication, information is essential. Disseminating crucial information is
an integral part of this communication. Media, TV, Radio can also be
considered under informative communication.
4. Persuasive
Persuasive communication requires a practicing voice that
convinces the public from a perspective.

5. Semiotics and Signs
Public Communication can also come in the form of signs and
semiotics in any dimension like Traffic signs, signs at airports, and many
more. This type of communication uses graphics to convey some
information to the public.

Categories of Speech
In Public Communication the speeches you deliver fall into
three general categories those are;
a. to inform,
b. to persuade, and
c. to entertain.

Sometimes you may want to share information and create a clear
understanding with an audience. Other times you may want your
audience to change their attitude and/or follow a different course of
action.

Speaking to entertain
To engage, interest, amuse
listeners
May include information
about occasion
Humor and offense
Narrative speaking (story-
telling)
Speaking to inform
To increase listeners'
understanding, awareness
May take form of
demonstration
Speaking to persuade
To change attitudes, beliefs,
behaviors
Categories Public Communication Speeches

Your role as a speaker!
Your image makes a statement.
The speaker and the audience both have needs. The
speech is about you and your audience. Through the
communication exchange, speakers seek from their
audience a response that can satisfy certain needs
In your role as a speaker, remember two things:

Though one hundred people may listen to the same speech,
each will come away with his or her own interpretation of what
the speaker said.
While we may share the same language, we do not share
identical experiences.

Selecting the topic
Scanning the audience
Speech purpose
Organizing and outlining the speech
Gathering of supporting materials
Giving the speech through language
and styles
Giving the speech through audio-visual
aids
Preparing for Audience feedback
Steps in
Public Speaking

Things you shouldn't do while giving a speech.
Turn back on audience
Slouch, hands in the pocket
Avoid uhm, ah, you know
Avoid nervous gestures actions or movements
Talk too fast
Talk too quietly

Most people are afraid of Public Speaking or "Stage fright"
or "performance anxiety" is the anxiety phobia which
may be aroused in an individual by fear to perform in front
of an audience, (for example, when performing in front of a
camera). In the context of public speaking
Fear of Public Speaking

Plan appropriately
First, make sure that you plan your communication
appropriately. Use tools like the the 7Cs of
Communication (clarity, correctness, conciseness,
courtesy, concreteness, consideration and
completeness.) to think about how you'll structure
what you're going to say.
Strategies for becoming a better
speaker

Practice
There's a good reason that we say, "Practice makes
perfect!" You simply cannot be a confident, compelling
speaker without practice.
Engage With Your Audience
When you speak, try to engage your audience. This makes you
feel less isolated as a speaker and keeps everyone involved with
your message. If appropriate, ask leading questions

Pay Attention to Body Language
If you're unaware of it, your body language
will give your audience constant, subtle clues
about your inner state. If you're nervous, or if
you don't believe in what you're saying, the
audience can soon know.
Think Positively
Positive thinking can make a huge difference to the success of
your communication, because it helps you feel more confident.

Conclusion
It is obvious now that public communication is crucial for delivering
information, news, message, or speech to the target audience group to
inform, motivate, entertain or persuade them for some favorable actions.
It is also highly important in building relations, forming connections, and
creating a network of people who are ready to engage with your business,
purpose, motivation, or thought process.
You, What are your thoughts about the importance of public communication
skills?

"THEY WILL FORGET WHAT YOU SAID, BUT THEY WILL
NEVER FORGET HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL"
