INTRODUCTION
• Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) isa serious
infection caused by the bacterium
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) that
involves the lungs but may spread to other
organs. TB is a contagious disease that can
infect anyone exposed to

DEFINITION
•Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a
contagious bacterial infection that involves
the lungs. It may spread to other organs

ETIOLOGY
•Tuberculosis (TB) iscaused by a bacterium
called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The
bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB
bacteria can attack any part of the body such
as the kidney, spine, and brain. Not everyone
infected with TB bacteria becomes sick.

EPIDEMIOLOGY
•TB infection is one of the most common
infections in the world. It is estimated that
nearly 2 billion people (about one fourth of
the world's population) are infected with M.
tuberculosis.Every year, about 10 million
people develop TB disease and 1.6 million
people die of it

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
•When a person gets active TB disease, it meansTB
bacteria are multiplying and attacking the lung(s) or
other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes,
bones, kidney, brain, spine and even the skin. From
the lungs, TB bacteria move through the blood or
lymphatic system to different parts of the body.Nov

SYMPTOMS
•The primary stage of TB does not cause symptoms. When symptoms of pulmonary TB
occur, they can include:
•Breathing difficulty
•Chest pain
•Cough (usually with mucus)
•Coughing up blood
•Excessive sweating, particularly at night
•Fatigue
•Fever
•Weight loss
•Wheezing

TREATMENT
•With the proper treatment, tuberculosis(TB, for short) is almost
always curable.
•Doctors prescribeantibioticsto kill the bacteria that cause it.
You’ll need to take them for 6 to 9 months.
Whatmedicationsyou take and how long you’ll have to take
them depends on which works to eradicate your TB. Sometimes,
antibiotics used to treat the disease don’t work. Doctors call this
"drug-resistant" TB. If you have this form of the disease, you may
need to take stronger medications for

ROLE OF A CAREGIVER
• Caregivers are providers of health care for children,
adults and the elderly who experience chronic physical
or psychological disabilities
