Pulse assessment Dr. Deepak Yadav (Heart-lung Transplant physical therapist) Assistant professor Dolphin Institute of biomedical and natural sciences

introduction A pulse is the number of times your heart beats in a given amount of time, usually a minute. It's also known as your heart rate. A pulse assessment is  a way to measure the rate and strength of your heartbeats , and is an important part of identifying life-threatening conditions.

Location and technique You can check your pulse on your wrist, neck, elbow, or top of your foot. The easiest places to check are your wrist or neck. Use the index and third fingers of your other hand to feel for your pulse. Apply enough pressure to feel each beat, but don't push too hard.

Rhythm and Strength Note if your pulse is regular or irregular. If it's irregular, determine if it's regularly irregular (e.g., three regular beats and one missed) or irregularly irregular (no pattern) Grade the strength of your pulse on a scale of 0 to 4:  0: No palpable pulse  1+: Faint but detectable pulse  2+: Slightly diminished pulse  3+: Normal pulse  4+: Bounding pulse Count the number of beats in 15 seconds or 30 seconds, and double that number to get your beats per minute.

Thank you
