5. Punjabi Culture Punjab was formed as linguistic state based on Punjabi language. Bhangra is one of the most famous and joys dance forms of India. Punjabi classical music based on bhangra and the modern music is a recent craze among the youths in India. The traditional attire of people is Kurta- Pyjama with turban for men. Women prefer Patiala suits and Salwar- Kameez as part of their traditional attire. History of Punjab Punjab, derived from Persian and introduced by the Turkic conquerors of India, literally means "five" ( panj ) "waters" ( āb ), i.e., the Land of Five Rivers, referring to the five rivers which go through it. First known mention of the word Punjab is in the writings of Ibn Batūtā , who visited the region in the 14th century. The term came into wider use in the second half of the 16th century, and was used in the book Tarikh -e-Sher Shah Suri (1580) The first mentioning of the Sanskrit equivalent of 'Punjab', however, occurs in the great epic, the Mahabharata ( pancha -nada 'country of five rivers') The name is mentioned again in Ain-e-Akbari  (part 1), written by  Abul Fazal , who also mentions that the territory of Punjab was divided into two provinces, Lahore and Multan.

7. Haryana is a state in India. During the British Raj period it was administered as a part of the Punjab province. It became a separate administrative entity in 1966. In some ancient Hindu texts, the boundaries of  Kurukshetra  correspond roughly to the state of Haryana. Thus according to the  Taittiriya Aranyaka  5.1.1., the Kurukshetra region is south of Turghna ( Srughna / Sugh in  Sirhind , Punjab), north of Khandava (Delhi and  Mewat  region), east of Maru (desert) and west of Parin . On 1 November 1966, Haryana was carved out on the basis of that the parts of Punjab which were to be Haryana's "Hindi-speaking areas." 8. Components of Swachh Bharat Mission namely; construction of household toilets, conversion of insanitary toilet into sanitary toilet, construction of community & public toilets, solid waste management and awareness generation were discussed. It was stated by the authorities that 13.8 % households in urban area of the state either do not have a sanitary toilet or practice open defecation. Under Swacch Bharat Mission (SBM), 1,10,125 households have been verified for provision of sanitary toilet facilities. 72,225 applications from the households have been sanctioned for the grant of incentive for construction of individual household latrine. The Govt. of India is providing grant of Rs.4000 per toilet and equal amount will be provided by Govt. of Punjab for construction of toilets. To the applicants, Rs.14 Cr. has already been released by the State Nodal Agency for Swachh Bharat Mission in Urban areas. Situation of Solid Waste Management (SWM) in the state was also reviewed. Solid waste management project at Amritsar and its adjoining 11 ULBs, Patiala, GMADA and Pathankot are also to be executed under the mission. Funds will also be provided for Capacity Building and Public Awareness components of Swachh Bharat Mission. The State of Punjab has already received 4.32 Cr and Rs . 1.08 Cr from MoUD , GoI for these components respectively. The 50% of these funds have also been transferred to the prominent ULBs for ULB’s level activities. 9. Geographical Location of Punjab Punjab, the land of five rivers, is located at the northwest end of India. It marks a clear demarcation of India from the neighbouring country of Pakistan. The state stands surrounded by Pakistan on its west, Jammu and Kashmir on its north, Himachal Pradesh on its northeast, Haryana on its southeast and Rajasthan on its southwest. Punjab has a total area of 50,362 square kilometers, which is around 1.54% of the total geographical area of the country. It is located between 29"30’N to 32"32’N latitude and 73"55’E to 76"50’E longitude.

10. Haryana is a landlocked state in northern India. It is between 27°39' to 30°35' N latitude and between 74°28' and 77°36' E longitude. The total geographical area of the state is 4.42 m ha, which is 1.4% of the geographical area of the country. The altitude of Haryana varies between 700 and 3600 ft (200 metres to 1200 metres) above sea level. As per India State of Forest Report, FSI, 2013, the Forest Cover in the state is 1586 km2 which is 3.59% of the state's geographical area and the Tree Cover in the state is 1282 km2which is 2.90% of the geographical area. Thus the Forest and Tree Cover of the Haryana state is 6.49% of its geographical area. Haryana has four main geographical features. 12. Weather Conditions of Punjab The Punjab Climate is determined by the extreme hot and extreme cold conditions. Punjab Climate comprises of three seasons. They are the summer months that spans from mid May to the end of June. The temperature remains above 40 °C (104 °F) in the entire region during this period. The rainy season in Punjab is from the months of early July to end of September. The rainy season in Punjab begins in the first weeks of July. It ranges from 250mm to 1000mm. The agriculture of the state highly depends on the rains. The winter season in Punjab is experienced during the months of early December to the end of February. The minimum temperature of the region remains below 5 °C (41 °F) for almost two months during the winter season.

15. Infant Mortality Ratio: - Infant mortality rate (IMR) is the number of deaths of children less than one year of age per 1000 live births. The rate for a given region is the number of children dying under one year of age, divided by the number of live births during the year, multiplied by 1,000. Literacy Ratio:- The total percentage of the population of an area at a particular time aged seven years or above who can read and write with understanding.  Infant Mortality Ratio:- The Total Fertility Rate of the State is 2.3. 19. Economic Profile of Punjab Punjab’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) was US$ 58.03 billion at current prices in 2014-15 as against US$ 21.6 billion in 2004-05. The state’s GSDP increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of10.39 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15.   GSDP

20. NSDP Punjab’s net state domestic product (NSDP) at current prices was US$ 51.06 billion in 2014-15 as against US$ 19.2 billion in 2004-05. Between 2004-05 and 2014-15, NSDP increased at a CAGR of 10.28 per cent.  

21. Per Capita GSDP   The state’s per capita GSDP at current prices was US$ 1,867.0 in 2014-15, up from US$ 830.7 in 2004-05. Punjab’s per capita GSDP expanded at a CAGR of 8.43 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15.

With a CAGR of 12.0 per cent, the tertiary sector has been the fastest growing among the three sectors – primary, secondary and tertiary – from 2004-05 to 2014-15 and is also the largest contributor to Punjab’s economy, contributing 49.75 per cent to the state’s GSDP. The growth was driven by trade, hotels, real estate, finance, insurance, communications, transport and other services. The secondary sector rose at a CAGR of 9.8 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15, driven by increasing manufacturing, construction and electricity as well as improved gas and water supply. 26. Economic Profile of Haryana At current prices, the total GSDP of Haryana was about US$ 72.2 billion in 2014-15. The state’s GSDP increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.93 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15. Growth was driven by expansion in the services sector, IT/ ITeS , real estate, biotechnology and tourism. GSDP

27. Per capita GSDP The state’s per capita GSDP in 2014-15 was US$ 2,723 compared with US$ 941.5 in 2004-05. The per capita GSDP increased at an average rate of 11.21 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15.

28. Percentage Distribution of GSDP Tertiary sector is the largest contributor to Haryana’s economy. In 2014-15, it contributed 53.4 per cent to the state’s GSDP at current prices. It was followed by the secondary sector at 26.4 per cent. The tertiary sector grew at an average rate of 15.1 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15. The growth was led by trade, hotels, real estate, finance, insurance, transport and communications. The secondary sector grew at an average rate of 10.6 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15. Its growth was driven by manufacturing, construction, and electricity and gas & water supply. The primary sector grew at an average rate of 11.3 per cent between 2004-05 and 2014-15.

31. Agriculture Sector of Punjab Punjab covers only 1.5 per cent of India’s geographical area and is considered to be the largest producer of different agricultural commodities in the country. The total area of Punjab is 5036 thousand hectares (50362 square kilometers). The net area sown in 2013-14 was 4145 thousand hectares. Most of the agriculture land in Punjab is sown more than once and area sown more than once is 3703 thousand hectares. Hence the total cropped area in 2013-14 was 7848 thousand hectares. According to 2001 figures, number of agriculture workers is 35.55 lakh.

32. Punjab covers only 1.5 per cent of India’s geographical area and is considered to be the largest producer of different agricultural commodities in the country. Punjab’s fruit production was 1.74 million tonnes in 2014-15. Apples accounted for a majority of the share in the overall fruit production in the state. During 2014-15, total vegetable production in the state was 4.06 million tonnes . Wheat is the major crop produced by the state, covering almost half of the cropped area. In 2014-15, wheat production stood at 16.56 million metric tonnes . 36. Investments in Punjab According to the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), cumulative FDI inflows1 from April 2000 to September 2015 amounted to US$ 1,354 million. In 2014-15, the outstanding investments stood at US$ 33.17 billion. The services sector maintained the highest share of outstanding investments, accounting for about 39 per cent. It was followed by the electricity sector with a share of about 31 per cent and construction & real estate with about 23 per cent. Gurdaspur-Rupnagar is emerged as a dominant region in Punjab in terms of outstanding investment with 33 per cent share. Amritsar-Patiala is the second most attractive region in Punjab with 27 per cent share. Firozpur-Sangrur is recognized as third most lucrative region with 20 per cent share in overall outstanding investment in 2014-15.

37. Sector-Wise Investments

38. Exports From Punjab Readymade garments & hosiery and yarn & textiles account for a majority of the share in the overall exports of the state. Rice and sports goods are the other major products that account for a significant share in Punjab’s export basket. Rice accounts for 11.5 per cent share in the overall exports of the state. Exports of pharmaceutical goods from the state accounted for 5.09 per cent share in total exports in 2014-15. The manufacturing exports from the state of Punjab accounted for 75 per cent of the total exports of the state with an overall exports value of US$ 4.52 billion. In addition, the engineering sector contributed 15 per cent to the total export value during 2014-15. In the Annual Plan 2015-16, a new scheme of Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports (ASIDE) was announced. The scheme aimed at including the states and UTs in the exports effort by providing them with the required assistance to create enhanced and appropriate infrastructure for the growth of exports. The nodal agency for fulfilling the purpose of the ASIDE scheme in the state will be Punjab State Import & Export Corporation.

Industries of Punjab The resources, policy incentives, infrastructure and climate in the state support investments in sectors such as agro -based industries, food products, light engineering goods, automotives , chemicals, sports goods, textiles, pharmaceuticals, paper and paper products, metal and alloy products. Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (PSIDC) and Punjab Small Industry and Export Corporation (PSIEC) are responsible for developing industrial infrastructure in the state. The department of economic and statistical analysis, Haryana is preparing index of industrial production of Haryana since the year 1971-72 The govt. of India has constituted a technical advisory committee (tac) for an in-depth examination of various technical issues such as identification of representative items basket for individual state, development of corresponding weighting diagram with an appropriate linkage with the weighting diagram of all India's index of industrial production etc. The recommendations of the technical advisory committee on comparable index of industrial production are examined by the central statistical organization (CSO), govt. of India and the guidelines on compilation of state level index of industrial production are prepared. Rail Network The railways play a major role in the state, connecting major industrial units in the oil refining, cement, fertiliser , thermal power and manufacturing sectors to suppliers and markets. Punjab’s railway network spans across 2,126 km and is considered to be more than two times that of the country’s average rail density. It falls under the jurisdiction of Northern Railways that spreads across Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand , Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh. The main inter-state railway routes are Amritsar-Ambala- Delhi, Sri Ganganagar -Ambala-Delhi, Ferozpur -Ludhiana-Ambala, Pathankot- Roopnagar - Fatehgarh Sahib and Sri Ganganagar -Bhatinda- Narwana .

47. As of November 2015, Punjab had total installed power generation capacity of 11,255.44 MW. It consisted of 5,013.03 MW under state utilities, 2,047.74 MW under central utilities and 4,194.67 MW under the private sector. Of the total installed capacity, 7,393.80 MW was contributed by thermal power, 3,145.13 MW by hydropower, 508.47 MW by renewable power and nuclear power contributed 208.04 MW to the total capacity. The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) is the nodal organization for renewable energy development in the state.. The total electricity consumption in Punjab during 2014-15 was 39,755 MKWH. The state government of Punjab has announced plans to install two thermal power plants with 660 MW capacity each in the state. Both plants are expected to be operational by the end of 2015. 48. Telecom According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Punjab telecom circle had 30.81 million wireless subscribers and 1.07 million wire-line subscribers, as of October 2015. The tele-density in the state was 104.22 per cent, which is significantly higher than the national average of 78.73 per cent, as of August 2015. As of May 2015, the state had 1,490 telephone exchanges. The state had 3,855 post offices as of May 2015. The number of telephones in the state as of March, 2015 was 1.1 million. During the same period, the number of mobile telephones in the state was 30.61 million. 51. Power The total number of electricity consumers in the state has increased from 3,544,380 in 2001-02 to 5,498,797 in 201415. In Annual Plan 2015-16, the Government of Haryana proposed an allocation of US$ 1.09 billion for restructuring of power sector in the state. To produce power from bagasse cooperation in sugar mills, 6 projects of 60 MW capacity have been established in cooperative sugar mills of the state in 2015. Furthermore, a 25 MW capacity project at Naraingarh sugar mill is under execution. During 2014-15, the state government has launched a special project for installation of 1,260 LED-based solar lighting systems and a 180 KW solar power plant is under installation which involves investment of US$ 0.88 million in 12 districts, namely, Ambala, Fatehabad , Bhiwani , Hisar , Jhajjar , Kaithal , Kurukshetra , Palwal , Panipat , Rohtak , Sonipat , and Yamuna Nagar. In the 2015-16 budget, the state government announced plans for setting up an 800 MW thermal power unit at Panipat worth US$ 663.57 million. This project is undertaken to increase the power supply and add new thermal power units in the state.

Tourism in Indian Punjab centers around the historic palaces, battle sites, and the great Sikh architecture of the state and the surrounding region.  Examples include various sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, the ancient fort of Bathinda, the architectural monuments of  Kapurthala , Patiala, and Chandigarh, the modern capital designed by Le Corbusier.  The Golden Temple in Amritsar is one of the major tourist destinations of Punjab].  Moreover, there is a rapidly expanding array of international hotels in the holy city that can be booked for overnight stays. Another main tourist destination is religious and historic city of Sri Anandpur Sahib where large number of tourists come to see the Virasat-e- Khalsa  ( Khalsa Heritage Memorial Complex) and also take part in Hola Mohalla  festival. Kila Raipur Sports Festival is also popular tourist attraction in Kila Raipur near Ludhiana. Shahpur kandi fort, Ranjit sagar lake and Muktsar Temple also popular attractions in Pathankot Tourism

54. Banking In Haryana There are currently 27 public sector banks in Haryana out of which 19 are nationalised banks and 7 are SBI and its associate banks, and rest one is IDBI bank which is categorised as other public sector bank & 22 private sector banks, 1 regional rural bank (RRB), 5 urban cooperative banks (UCBS) & 5 foreign banks in Haryana. The total deposits of the Banks in Haryana touched Rs.1,87,717 crore as on December 2013, showing an increase of 14% during the review period January-December 2012 While, the total Advances during the period from January 2013 to Dec. 2013 have increased by Rs.23,200 crore i.e. from Rs.1,32,094 crore to Rs.1,55,294 crore registering a growth of 17% Weaker Sector Advances have also increased by Rs.2052 crore on YOY basis from Rs.14494 crore as at Dec. 2012 to Rs.16546 crore as at Dec. 2013 showing growth of 14% Overall CD Ratio as at Dec. 2013 for State as a whole stands at 83%.
