To minimise costs and leverage economies of scale , they intend to focus on standardising the type of medical and other consumables used across their network , optimising procurement costs, consolidating their suppliers, and optimising the use of medical consumables by establishing guidelines for medical procedures across the network.

APOLLO HOSPITALS INTRODUCTION Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited is an Indian multinational healthcare group headquartered in Chennai. It is the largest for-profit private hospital network in India, with a network of 71 owned and managed hospitals. Along with the eponymous hospital chain, the company also operates pharmacies, primary care and diagnostic centres , telehealth clinics, and digital healthcare services among others through its subsidiaries. Apollo Hospitals was founded by Prathap C. Reddy in 1983 as the first corporate health care in India.
Procurement and Material Management Strategies of Apollo Hospitals The core of Apollo Hospitals’ growth strategy is to maximize operating efficiency and profitability across the network. The goal is to reduce the cost of expensive drugs and medical consumables such as stents, implants, and other surgical materials by standardizing across the network , optimizing procurement costs, consolidating suppliers, and optimizing use of medical consumables by establishing guidelines for medical procedures. On January 28, 2022, Apollo Pharmacies Limited (APL), an associate company of AHEL, entered into a deal to list its pharmacy products on the e-commerce platform of Amazon India . This development has also facilitated the Company to entrench better procurement prices and provide operating leverage given limited opex. Moreover, the platform has the potential to push more private label sales.
Procurement and Material Management Strategies of Apollo Hospitals They have been early adopters of tele-medicine technology and deliver these services across Primary Care, Specialist Consults, Ophthalmology, Tele-Radiology, Tele-ECG, and E-ICU. Partnering with leading manufacturers for critical medical equipment like Da Vinci Surgical Systems for robotic surgery or Philips for advanced monitoring systems. This ensures top-of-the-line technology and potentially better patient outcomes.
Similar to NH, Apollo might utilize e-procurement platforms such as ATHMA for online ordering, automated approvals, and real-time inventory tracking. This reduces administrative costs and improves efficiency. Apollo might establish long-term contracts with key suppliers for essential medical supplies or equipment. This can secure consistent quality, potentially negotiate better pricing through volume discounts, and streamline procurement processes. Like NH actively seeks domestic manufacturers for medical equipment, especially for low-complexity devices. This reduces reliance on expensive imports and potentially creates a more stable supply chain. Apollo should also implement such measures to tackle Solutions
