PAINTING AND
COATINGS
ARIE RAY B. DEL-AMIN

Main objectives of painting work:
 To protect the surfaces from atmospheric influences and
to preserve them from the decay, oxidation, and corrosion.
 To improve the appearance of surfaces.
 To facilitate the cleaning of surfaces.

Types of painting work:
 Interior of flats bungalows.
 Interior common areas of a building.
 Exteriors of the building.

Description of Paints:
Oil Paint1.
Oil paints, often using lead-based primers, are applied in layers
for durability. They offer matte or glossy finishes, are easy to
apply and clean, and are affordable. Ideal for walls, doors,
windows, and metal.

Description of Paints:
2. Enamel Paint
Enamel paints are created by combining lead or zinc with
varnish and pigments. They dry to a hard, glossy finish that's
easy to clean and resists water and chemicals. While they offer
excellent coverage and color retention, they have drawbacks:
slow drying times and the need for a titanium primer.

Description of Paints:
3. Emulsion Paint
Emulsion paints, often water-based, use polymers like vinyl
acetate and polystyrene as binders. They dry quickly and are
easily cleaned with water. These paints offer good durability,
color retention, and resist alkali.

Description of Paints:
4. Cement Paint
Cement paint is a powder mixed with water to create a durable,
waterproof coating. Made with cement and often colored
pigments, it's ideal for rough internal and external surfaces.

Description of Paints:
5. Thinners
– Solvents added to paint where necessary to make the pigment
and vehicle attain the proper spreading consistency and
desired drying time or when a thin coat of paint is desired.

Description of Paints:
6. Primer
– The first coat of paint applied over the surface. It seals the
pores of the materials, thereby preventing uneven absorption
of the topcoat paint.

Estimating Paints:
Generally, the number of coats required consists of one primer coat adnone or two
topcoats for previously unpainted surfaces.
The coverage is the area which a given quantity of paint, usually 4 liters, can cover
per coat applied. It is expressed as the numer of square meters per 4 liters.
Primers and topcoat paints are usually ordered in 16-liter and 4-liter cans, while
tinting colors are generally purchased in 1liter and ¼ liter containers.

The computed areas and the number of coats and coverage of paint to be used for
painting job are as follows:
