LINEAR AND NON-LINEAR TEXT

Objectives: 1. Identify linear and non-linear texts 2. Express understanding of presented data by transcoding from linear to non-linear and vice versa 3. Transcode linear text to non-linear text and vice versa

Linear Text traditional text that needs to be read from beginning to end follows a sequential reading path where the reader tries to make sense of the text through grammatical arrangement and relationship of words.

it also includes printed texts E.g. novels, poems, short stories, letters, essays, articles

Non-Linear Text non-sequential which means the reader, not the author, decide how the text is to be read without necessarily following a prescribed pattern Examples: charts, diagrams, and other graphic organizers

EXAMPLES OF NON-LINEAR TEXTS

Venn Diagram uses two overlapping shapes usually circles to show or represent the similarities and differences between two or more items or concepts Sharks Whales -hunt for their food - fish -only have cartilages -do not have this hunting tendency -mammals -have bones -marine animals -live in the ocean environment -only have single tail -large aquatic animals -consume large volume of food

Pie Graph is a circular statistical tool. It uses portions or slices to represent numerical proportions or percentages of a given whole. Whales -do not have this hunting tendency -mammals -have bones

Flow Chart a diagram representing a process using different symbols containing information about steps or a sequence of events. Each of these symbols is linked with arrows to illustrate the flow direction of the process

Whales -do not have this hunting tendency -mammals -have bones How to Cook Kinunot na Pagi or Flaked Stingray

Transcoding Linear to Non-Linear Texts and Vice Versa

TRANSCODING -to transcode means to transform something from one form to another

To transcode a linear text to a non-linear text, one may follow these steps: Step 1: Read the passage to get a general idea of the subject matter. Step 2: Think of the appropriate graphic organizer to use Step 3: Look at the visual to identify what information is needed to complete the chart. Step 4: Locate the relevant information in the passage and transfer it to the chart. Use keywords or phrases only. Step 5: You may be required to classify information into categories under headings.

Transcoding non-linear text to linear text Step 1: Interpret a diagram, table, charts and graphs and present the information in your own words. Step 2: Organize, present and possibly compare. Step 3: Describe an object, event, or series of events.

TASK 2. TRUE OR FALSE. Tell whether the statements about linear and non-linear texts are true or false. If the statement is true, say “ANO Panes!” and if the statement is false, say “AW ANO!”. 1. Non-linear text focuses on the arrangement of the words both grammatically and stylistically.

Texts with visuals or graphs are considered as examples of non-linear texts. 3. In linear text, the readers do not have to go through the text in a sequential manner in order to make sense of the text.

4. Novels, poems, short stories, letters, articles, and all those texts we read from the beginning to the end are linear texts. 5. Non-linear text is combined with visual elements.

What I Can Do (Differentiated Activity) Activity 2: My Version 2.0 Transcode the information assigned to you and present it in class in your most creative way. You can act, sing, or dance during your presentation or you can just present your transcoded version through various designs (whatever you prefer.)

Information 1 Facebook and Tiktok are both social media platforms. Also, both can be an avenue for online businesses. However, Facebook is like a big online community where you connect with friends and family through posts and messages. Tiktok , on the other hand, is all about short and fun videos, mainly loved by younger users.

Information 2 LIFE CYCLE OF A FISHERMAN The life of a fisherman is a cycle. For some, before the sun sets, they will prepare first all the necessary equipment for their sail which includes a gask mask, speargun or pana , diving fins or yapak , flashlight, etc. Second, when everything is set, they are now ready to traverse to reach their destination. Once they arrive, they will prepare themselves to dive into the depths of the sea, looking for the perfect spot where the fruits of the ocean lie. If they have hauled enough, they will embark for their return. Back onshore, they will sort what they have gotten and sell it to the livelihood or to the fish buyers.

INFORMATION 3 How to Cook Binagkat na Galyang First, prepare all ingredients, sugar, coconut milk, evaporated/condensed milk, sugar and “ galyang ”. Make sure to cut the “ galyang ” on its proper bite-size. Next, soften it using the second coconut milk. Once softened, add the first coconut milk, sugar, and milk to make it creamier. Then, mix it thoroughly. When you have achieved the desired softness of the galyang , it’s ready to be served. Enjoy!

-designed for catching fish -equipped with tools like nets and traps   -have a hull to stay afloat - have an engine to move them in the water   -meant to carry people - has comfortable seating areas

INFORMATION 5

1.What is linear text? 2. What is non-linear text? 3. How do they differ? 4. Why is it important to learn how to transcode information?

Quiz Read the following statements then identify what is being described. Choose your answers from the pool of words below. This type of text does not need to be read from beginning to an end. It means to transform something from one form to another. This diagram used two overlapping circles to show the similarities and differences of two items or concepts. This type of text follows a sequential reading path. This graph uses portions or slices to represent numerical proportions or percentages of a given whole. linear text Venn diagram non-linear textflow chart transcode pie chart

B. Identify if the given example is a linear or non-linear text. Put a check ( / ) if it is linear and cross ( x ) if it is non-linear. poem short stories flow chart pie chart essay

ASSIGNMENT: Present how you spend your time in a day through creating a non-linear text. Make sure to use the appropriate non-linear text then transcode it into linear text.

THANK YOU! HAPPY LEARNING 
