SUBATOMIC PARTICLE OF AN ATOM PREPARED BY: AIRA MAE D. DELA CRUZ -PRACTICE TEACHER-

Classroom Reminders Sit properly. If you want to answer, just raise your hands. Do not answer in chorus. Avoid chatting with your seatmates during class discussion. Avoid using cellphone during class discussion, unless it is needed.

LETS REVIEW! Melting Liquid Evaporation Condensation Sublimation Gas

Picture Analysis

What is an Atom? The word “atom” derived from the Greek word “ atomos ” which means indivisible. Atom is the smallest particle unit of matter and thought to be the smallest particle of a given element.

THE SUBATOMIC PARTICLES AND THEIR PROPERTIES Subatomic particles The particles which make up the atom. Electron Proton Neutron

THE THREE (3) SUBATOMIC PARTICLES OF AN ATOM Protons The positively charge Found in the nucleus of an atom Electrons The negatively charge Found outside of the nucleus. Neutrons No charge Found inside the nucleus of an atom Neutron Proton Electron Electron Shell-Orbit

Properties of the three subatomic particles The mass of an atom is solely due to the mass of the proton and neutron. Subatomic Particle (Symbol) Charge Mass in grams Location in the Atom Discoverer Electron -1 Outside the Nucleus Joseph John Thomson Proton +1 Inside the Nucleus Ernest Rutherford Neutron Inside the Nucleus James Chadwick

Nucleons Referred to the proton and neutron inside the nucleus. It forms the nucleus within the center of the atom.

Electric charge Is a fundamental electrical property that is either of positive or negative type to which the mutual attractions or repulsions between protons or electrons is attributed.

Conductors Are materials that allow the electrons to flow freely from atom to atom. Examples: Iron Copper Aluminum

Insulators Are materials that prevent the free flow of electrons from atom to atom Examples: Rubber Wood

GENERALIZATION What are the three subatomic particles of an atom? What is the charge of proton? What is the charge of electron? How about the neutron? Where does the proton located? Where does the electron located? How about the neutron?

I. Di rection : Identify the term being referred to. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper. _____ 1. Most of the mass of an atom is found in the _______.

_____ 2. The subatomic particle of an atom which has a positive charge.

_____ 3. It is where the protons located.

_____ 4. It is referred to the proton and neutron inside the nucleus.

_____ 5. It is where the electrons are located.

II. Di rection : Illustrate the model of an atom and label its subatomic particles. (5 pts )
