Review When you try to identify phrase types, first look for the Head word in the phrase - this will tell you what type of phrase it is. If the Head is a noun, then the phrase is an NP, if it's a verb, then the phrase is a VP, and so on. The correct answers are: (1) AP -- the Head is the adjective  expensive (2) VP -- the Head is the verb  met (3) NP -- the Head is the noun  car (4) PP -- the Head is the preposition  in (5) AdvP -- the Head is the adverb  early (6) NP -- the Head is the pronoun  him . We deliberately included this example to remind you that pronouns, as a subclass of nouns, can function as the Heads of NPs. The pronoun  him  is the Head of the NP  him .
