Blindness Globally – 4 crores

Causes of Corneal Blindness

Injury

Infections

Chemical Burns

Congenital disorders

What is eye donation Donting eyes after death is eye donation

Why is eye donation necessary?

No. of people blind in India:1,20,00,000 No. of people blind due to corneal disease:20,00,000 Number needing corneal transplantation:10,00,000 Annual requirement of eyes:75,000 – 1,00,000 Present procurement of eyes:22,000

Who can Donate Eyes? Anybody of any age can donate eyes. Even if the deceased has medical history of hypertension, diabetes, asthma, tuberculosis etc., & even spectacle wearers People who have undergone cataract operation can donate eyes. Practically anybody from the age of 2 years. There is no upper age limit.

Who can’t Donate Eyes? Death from unknown cause. Death due to infections caused viz. Rabies, syphilis, infectious hepatitis, septicaemia , and AIDS. Any frank ocular infection and previous refractive surgery.

Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP) To address the non- availability of quality corneal tissues, The Eye bank Association of India (EBAI) came up with a new strategy called the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP). The HCRP programme was initiated by Ramayamma International Eye Bank (LVPEI) in 1990 and has recorded a high yield of donor tissues recovered through HCRP.

HOSPITAL CORNEA RETRIEVAL PROGRAMME (HCRP) Hospital Corner Retrieval Programme (HCRP) aims at the retrieval of cornea tissues from eligible and willing donors after death in the hospital. An established team comprising of the ICU staff, grief counsellor and eye bank staff will work synchronously to make the retrieval possible

Need for Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP)

What is Grief Counselling?

Advantages of Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme More number of deaths in hospitals Younger donors -> good quality of corneal tissue Quick access -> reduction of time interval between death to enucleation Easy availability of detailed medical history and investigation reports The donors can become multiple organ donors if the relatives wish to donate

IGMC&RI Number of corneas retrieved 2017 : 186 2018 : 168 2019 : 148 2020 : 126 2021 : 18 2022 : 96 2023 : 110 2024 : 66 till date Utilisation % of IGMCRI tissues 2017 : 60% 2018 : 80% 2019: 76%

Reasons people refuse to donate eyes Common myths and misconception Lack of information about the process Inactive role of the eye banks Lack of clarity of the nature of eye banks and their functions

Steps in Counselling Conversation/communication with the donor family Introduction – Counsellor introduces himself/herself Expresses of sympathy Discuss briefly about corneal blindness Talks about the eye donation Allow the final decision making to the family

Talks about the facts of eye donation

The family may show these kinds of Negative reactions also Like Protest Despair Detachment Delayed reaction

Positive Counselling Confidentiality about the donor and recipient. Certificate of appreciation. Assurance that eyes are not sold. Express gratitude for listening patiently. Provide pamphlet and phone number for further details / contact.

Serology The 5cc of blood collected from the donor is tested for : Human Immuno Deficiency virus (AIDS) Hepatits B Syphilis

What are the myths and facts of eye donation? Myths My religion doesn't allow organ and tissue donation. If I donate my eyes it will disfigure my face Facts Most religions throughout the world support organ and tissue donation as a humanitarian act. As only the cornea is removed there is no disfigurement

Myths Donation will be costly to my family The whole eye can be transplanted Is cancer a rule-out for donation? Facts There is no cost to the donor's family. The Eye Bank pays for all costs related to corneal donation Only the cornea and the sclera (the white of the eye) can be transplanted No, not all cancers are contra-indications for eye donation.

Eyes which have undergone surgery cannot be used Even eyes which have undergone surgery in the past can be used for transplantation

THANK YOU
