Big developments in Lesotho Lesotho is experiencing a period of growth and development, with a number of ambitious projects underway which will bring new opportunities to the country. There has been recent developments in last years which include construction of dams, mines and roads, which have potential to transform Lesotho’s economy and infrastructure. This developments have social impacts and benefits distributed across the country including

Lesotho Highlands Water Project It is a multi-phased project which benefits the country in a way that it provides water to the Gauteng region of South Africa and to generate hydro-electricity for Lesotho. It was established by the 1986 Treaty signed by the Lesotho government and Republic of South Africa. It involves the construction of an intricate of tunnels and dams to divert water from the mountain of Lesotho to South Africa LHDA is responsible for the projects overall implementation works such as dams, tunnels, power stations and infrastructure on Lesotho boarders.

There are different phases in the water projects, which are: Phase 1: Katse Dam it is in Central Maluti Mountains and it is 185m –high curvature concrete arch, it has capacity of 93.54%

The second phase: The Mohale-Dam, it is over 145m concrete- faced rock-fill on the Senqunyane River it has storage capacity of 958 million cubic meters and a spillway discharge of 2.600m/s. It has a 32km interconnecting transfer tunnel between the Katse and Mohale reservoirs.

Big Developments also involve infrastructures like: Hospitals, namely Queen Elizabeth II hospital and Queen Mamohato Memorial hospital. Firstly Queen Two as it is called is a government hospital located in the central Maseru City it is a project that was constructed in the early 1950’s during the colonial period, and was named after queen Elizabeth ll of the united kingdom, who was the reigning monarch at the time of its construction. It was renovated and expanded with assistance of the Chinese government, and it is part of the china aid and developments projects in Lesotho. It is expected to be complete by the end of this year with operations set to begin in the first quarter of 2024,
