RESEARCH
QUOTA
SAMPLING
WHAT IS
QUOTA
SAMPLING?
A nonprobability sampling technique.
Quota sampling is where you take a very
tailored sample that’s in proportion to some
characteristic or trait of a population.
Intersected with gender, age, levels,
socioeconomic status, etc
2 TYPES OF QUOTA
SAMPLING
CONTROLLED QUOTA
SAMPLING
UNCONTROLLED QUOTA
SAMPLING
involves introduction of certain
restrictions in order to limit
researcher’s choice of samples.
it resembles convenience sampling
method in a way that researcher is free
to choose sample group members
according to his/her will.
RESEARCH
When to use Quota Sampling?
If stratified sampling is not available.
If the study is a characteristic of a particular subgroup or observes relationships between
different subgroups.
If the researchers have a limited time frame, they can use quota sampling as it is a relatively
quick method of sampling.
This method of sampling is also relatively cheaper than other methods, hence, it is also used
when researchers have a limited budget.
STEPS IN QOUTA SAMPLING
Assess the data and
determine the traits
to be chosen for
classification
Determine the
number of samples
to be taken from
each group.
Selection of
samples.
Conduct surveys
according to the
quotas defined.
Examples:
RESEARCH
A researcher studies about the comparison of eating habits of girls and boys in their school
which has 1000 students 700 are girls and 300 are boys. The given sample size is 100.
1.
Divide the population into subgroups.1.
Girls - 700
Boys - 300
2. Determine the number of samples.
G = 100 / 1000 x 700 = 70
B = 100 / 1000 x 300 = 30
3. Selection of samples.
Since the calculation is done, the researcher needs
70 girls and 30 boys to represent the eating habits
of girls and boys in their school.
4. Conduct surveys according to the
quotas defined.
Examples:
RESEARCH
2. The researchers want to study the buying habits of the people in South Korea depending on
their gender and employment status.
Let's also assume the following:
Employment Status:
10% of South Korea’s workforce is unemployed.
90% of South Korea’s workforce is employed.
Gender
40% of South Korea’s population identifies as
male.
60% of South Korea’s population identifies as
female.
For this study, let’s say a sample size of 100 people is
decided upon. Researchers will use market research
tools that have quotas to decide how many males and
females are chosen in regard to their employment
status. Therefore they may choose to include 60 females
and 40 males, 10 of whom are unemployed. These
elements will be chosen by the researcher on the basis
of convenience or judgment.
ADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
OF QUOTA
SAMPLING
It saves time.
Quota sampling reduces cost.
Quota sampling can be used in the absence of
sampling frames.
DISADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
OF QUOTA
SAMPLING
Sample selection is not random.
Issues occur
Time-consuming.
