The refrigerant inside your fridge or air conditioner is the driving force by
which it cools. For decades the refrigerant R-22 was used in air conditioners,
but this is soon going to change. The problem lies within the severe ozone
depleting properties of R-22. R-22 emits chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), a
chemical that destroys our planets protective ozone layer. This is especially
dangerous, since atmospheric ozone is the Earth's main line of defense against
deadly ultraviolet light from the sun. Due to its ozone destroying properties,
R-22 has been proved to be a harmful to life on Earth.
Without the protective layer of the ozone layer, ultraviolet light from the sun
hits the Earth's surface directly. Eventually this can result in the doomsday
scenario of rising sea levels and melting polar ice caps, which will destroy coast
infrastructure around the world. With enough UV light, the Earth would heat up
to such an extent that life cannot be sustained. In due time this can lead to
catastrophic consequences of every animal and plant slowly becoming
endangered and dying out. Obviously no one wants this to happen, and the
switch to a less toxic refrigerant is already underway.
Such is the overwhelming scientific evidence against the dangers of R-22;
industrialized countries around the world have taken major steps to find an
alternative refrigerant for their air conditioners and fridges. As such, there has
been a global multi pronged approach to switch from R-22 to R410A
Refrigerant. This is done in the following ways:
Through legislation. The United States and European Union countries have
banned R-22 and any other industrial chemicals responsible for depleting the
ozone.
Air conditioner manufacturers have taken the initiative to create new models
using compressors that use the non-ozone depleting R-410A as a refrigerant.
Contractors and technicians have learned to install and maintain new central
and window air conditioners using the R410A refrigerant.
