HISTORY OF RIZAL LAW
WHY STUDY the “RIZAL’S LAW” ? To strenghten Patriotism ( commitment to the country) Re-dedicate the idea of freedom.
REPUBLIC ACT 1425 or the “RIZAL’S LAW” An act to include in the curricula of all public and private schools, colleges, and universities courses on the life, works, and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo , authorizing the printing and distribution thereof, and for purposes.
REPUBLIC ACT 1425 or the “RIZAL’S LAW” Also known as the 438 senate bill, Authored by Senator Claro M. Recto- and is considered as one of the most controversial bills in the Philippines.
WHY CONTROVERSIAL?? The issuance of the bill was not welcomed by various quarters; The catholic church considered it as an Anti-church, because it forced the students to read Rizal’s works;
WHY CONTROVERSIAL?? it contains passages that were anti-church;
WHY CONTROVERSIAL?? one of the oppositors during the hearing of the said law named Fr. Jesus Cavana commented that, “Rizal’s novels belongs to the past and it would be harmful to read them because it presented a false picture of the conditions of the country at that time” ( majority of the priest that joined the hearing was foreigners and they opposed to the said law)
WHY CONTROVERSIAL?? according to Fr. Cabana, out of 333 pages of Noli Me Tangere there are only 25 patriotic statements compared to 120 anti-catholic statements; the church continued its opposition to the said law by calling all the catholic voters to reject the lawmakers who supported Recto’s Rizal Bill; pastoral letters were read during masses voicing opposition;
WHY CONTROVERSIAL?? Bishops threaten to close all the catholic school if the bill was approved; Recto stood his ground and dared the catholic schools to shut down, knowing that these was only an idle threat since the catholic learning institutions were their source of income.
