Fiber Density
Fiber Parameter Length (mm) Diameter (mm) Density g/cm

Experimental Value 39 0.362 1.095
Determination of areca fibre dimensions was carried out by taking 2000 areca
fibres. Areca fibre dimensions were obtained via optical microscopy (Olympus
SZ-PT )
Electronic balance with accurateness of 0.1 mg was used in the measurement of
overall weight of areca fibres present in every group.
The density test of areca fibres was conducted in accordance with ASTM D-792
method using a Sartorius analytical balance

Spectral Analysis of Untreated Areca Fibre
The absorption band in the region of 3850 to 3300 cm
-1
to O-H stretching vibration of
cellulose. The spectrum of untreated areca fibres are dominated by the peak at 3419.18 cm
-1

hydroxyl group and hydrogen bonded -OH stretching vibration of cellulose.
The absorption peaks at 2953.92 cm
-1
, 2922.75 cm
-1
and 2851.61 cm
-1
are the characteristic
bands responsible for C-H stretching vibration from CH and CH
2 in cellulose and
hemicelluloses components.

Spectral Analysis of Alkali Treated Areca Fibre
A reduction in the broadening of the peak ranging from 3850 cm
-1
to 3300 cm
-1
due to
hydroxyl group and hydrogen bonded O-H stretching vibration of cellulose which is
observed at 3442.64 cm
-1
in the treated areca fibre confirmed the chemical modification
of areca fibres by alkali treatment.
Alkali treatment of areca fibres resulted in the formation of Fibre–cell–O–Na groups
between the cellulose molecular chains and hence there is absence of peak due to H-
bonded O-H bending vibration of alcoholic group of cellulose at 1377.86 cm
-1
in the
alkali treated areca fibres.
