Economy and Industry Profile
§The occupational pattern in Rajkot is primarily based on manufacturing and service sector. About
42%of workers are engaged in service activities and 34%in manufacturing activities
§Manufacturing activities are concentrated in two main industrialestates – Aji and Bhaktinagar
§In the past, Rajkot concentrated around the establishment of cloth mills. The current trend of industrial
growth is towards the Engineering and Autoancillarysector . In this sector, diesel engine is the
leading business with around 105 manufacturing units operationalin the district
§The district also has various manufacturing units for machine tools, industrial equipments, lathe
machines, metallurgical industries, electronics, engineering and auto ancillary sector
§Small and medium industries are dominated by foundries, engineering & automobile works, textile
related units gold & silver jewellery, handicrafts, spices, medicines, and wall clocks
§Jetpur taluka of the district is famous for dyeing and printing business and Paddharitaluka for
ginning and pressing business in the entire State

§Rajkot district is the largest producer of cotton in
the State. It is the second largest producer for oil
seeds with groundnut being the major oil seed
§In 2006-07, Rajkot produced 12,996 Metric
Tonnes (MT) of fruits , 4.09 lakh MT of
vegetables and 0.81 lakh MT of spices.
§Main fruits include mango, chikoo, citrus & papaya
§Rajkot is the second largest producer of onions
in Gujarat state with 2.73 lakh MT of production in
2006-07 contributing 22% to the total production of
onions in the State
§Rajkot is the second largest producer of spices
contributing 13%to total production in the State.
Garlic and cumin are main spice crops in the
district with 27%share to the total production

Minerals
§Rajkot district is rich in minerals such as fireclay,
chalk, perliteand limestone
§Rajkot taluka is the largest producer of fireclay in the
district contributing 92% of the total state production
during 2005-06. Due to abundant availability of
fireclay in the district, firebricks and ceramic related
industries (crockery) businesses have developed in
Wankaner and Morbi talukas
§In India, perliteused for horticulture and construction
applications only occurs in Rajkot district. In 2001-02,
the sole mine for perlitein the country recorded
production of 137 Metric Tonnes

was INR 1,495 Crore (USD 356 million) and during
1998 -2007 investments were to the tune of INR

Economy Drivers
§Rajkot is one of the biggest centers for engineering industry. Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for
engineering sector is proposed in the district, which will further boost the growth of engineering
sector as well as increase the industrial output and exports of the district
§Growth in real estate in Rajkot is quite rapid due to the large investments made by top realty players in
projects such as development of townships, group housing, commercial complexes, and IT Parks. This
will increase the investments and employment opportunities in the infrastructure sector as well
§The State Government has identified various industrial clusters to fuel the industrial growth in the
district. Major industries identified are engineering (diesel engine, machine tools, electric motors,
casting and forging), ceramics/floor tiles , textiles , gems and jewellery , ginning and oxidized
metals. Development of these clusters will lead to industrial growth inthe district
§The district has huge reserves of minerals, especially fireclay which has led to the growth of specific

§Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz
Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), an irrigation canal, dams, and surface
reservoirs
§To avail the water from Sardar Sarovar project, Maliya branch canal project is planned. In this project,
Narmada water from Sardar Sarovar will reach through Saurashtra main canal upto Maliya; from
Maliya to Hadalathe water would reach through canal and from Hadalato Rajkot by a pipeline

Navlakhi Port
§Navlakhi is an all-weather lighterage port located at inner side of Gulf of Kutch
on the west coast of India
§The port is connected to National highway at a distance of 45 kms and through a
broad gauge railway line with the rest of India. The nearest airport is Rajkot is at
a distance of 110 km
§The main cargo handled at Navlakhi port is coal & coke, flourspar, pig iron and
salt
§One deep-water lighterage jetty of 102 m. has been constructed by M/s United
Shippers Ltd. and has been operational since March 2000
§M/s United Shippers Ltd., M/S DharmasiMorarji, M/s JaydeepAssociates and
M/s. ShreejiShipping have been allotted to create private jetty for handling of

•The Gujarat State Road Development Corporation (GSRDC) has proposed a
four lane highway connecting Rajkot –Jamnagar –Vadinar with estimated
cost of INR 775 crore (185 million) for which in-principle approval is granted

§It is proposed to provide port linkage through railway line between Dahisara
to Maliya –Samakhyali–Palanpur. The distance is about 37 km and cost of
the rail project is estimated to be INR 148 crore (USD 35 million)
