Introduction King of Nutrition. Brazil is top producer in the world Red kidney beans known as “ Rajma ” in northern India. Grown in most of the state’s northern and southern parts of India. Called as common bean, haricot bean, navy bean or snap bean.

Botany Leaves -Broad at the base , can be simple or compound. Root – Single main taproot and fibrous roots. Flower- Bilaterally symmetrical.

Soil and Climate Tropical and temperate. 60 to 150 cm of rainfall annually. Ideal temperature - 15°C to 25°C. Short day plant . Rains cause flower drop. Well drained loamy soils. pH 5.5 to 6.0

Varieties Dwarf types - Contender, PusaParwati , Pant Anupama , ArkaKomal , Selection-S Climbing types - Kentucky Wonder, RCMFB-l

Seed Establishment Seed rate-: Bush bean-75kg/ha Pole bean-50kg/ha Time of Sowing -: kharif - last week June to first week of July. Rabi – October to November. Spacing-: Bush bean-50cm×10 cm. Pole bean -60cm×45 cm.

Manures and fertilizers Nitrogen about 90 to 120 kg/ha. 60 to 70 kg of P 2 O 5 /ha FYM- 10-15 ton/ha.

Water management Crop requires pre-sowing irrigation for better germination. Critical stage - 3 to 4 weeks after sowing. Four irrigations @ 25, 50, 75 and 100 DAS.

Weed control One hand weeding/hoeing at 30-35 DAS. Pre-emergence herbicide like Pendimethalin @ 0.75 to 1 kg a.i./ha.

Diseases Anthracnose – Symptom- Lesions on leaves are dark brown. Control- Seed treated with Carbendazim & Thirum (1:1) . Stem blight – Symptom - Small water-soaked spots are first symptoms observed on leaves. Control- Foliar spary of Carbandazim @ 0.2 % Angular leaf spot- Symptom- Infected pods have brown blotches. Control- Carbendazim @ 2-3 g/kg of seeds.

Insect and pest Stem fly- Stem becomes to swell and split. Control - Seed treated with Chlorphyriphos @8ml/kg seed. Black Aphids- Sucking plant sap. Control- Dimethoate or Oxydemeton methyl @1 ml/l of water.

Harvesting Rajma crop will be ready for cutting when the pod turns to brown colour. Harvesting to be done after 120 to 130 days. Harvested plants should be kept on sun for 3 to 4 days. Threshing can be done by bullocks or with sticks/sickle.

Yield Yield of Rajma about 10 to 12 quintals/ hectare.
