Rammanis organized every year in the month of April i.e. Baisakhi which is organized
in Sallud village of Chamoli district. The special thing about the fair is that Ramman
is believed to be associated with Ramayana, in which some of the Ramayana in the
last days of the event. The presentation of the episodes isperformed in the form of
mask danceand the name Raman is also named on thelines of Ramayana.
It is said that the Ramman festival is celebrated here from a very old time for about
500 years, as well as the festival is celebrated jointly by the local panchayat for 11 to
13 days, the names of some of the villages are given below.

Mass worship rituals, singing, dancing etc. are organized in the form of a fair in
Raman, Ramman has been declared as a World Heritage by UNESCO on 2 October
2009, for which the credit goes to the local teacher Dr. Kushal Singh Bhandari. Due to
hard work, this local fair could become famous on the world stage and in the past
the tableau of Ramman festival was also seen on the occasion of Republic Day.

There is another story related to Ramman fair Ramman fair chamoli, according to which this story is
related to Adi Guru Shankaracharya, inwhich itis told that in the medieval period, when the influence
of Sanatan Dharma i.e. Hindu religion was decreasing, then Shankaracharya ji built four mathas i.e. four
temples. Constructed and the disciples of Adi Guru Shankaracharya performed mask dance in Joshimath
of Chamoli here and again instilled faith in Sanatan Dharma (Hindu) among the people, later this dance
became prevalent here in the form of Ramman Fair.
Sanatan refers to that religion which is never ending, which is going on continuously.

Masks are often used in the Raman fair, due to which it is also called mask dance, and it is also
interesting that this dance is done without saying anything.
Mask types in Joshimath Ramman fair
There are two types of masks used in Ramman Mela Chamoli, one of which is for
entertainment while the other type of masks are the masks of the deities.
The masks of entertainment are called Gha-pattarwhile the masks of entertainment are called by the
nameKhalyari .
The special thing about these masks is that these masks are made of mulberry tree, which requires a
lot of hard work to make and mulberry is a fruit which is eaten by the people.

These dances are based on the local people, which include traders, wild animals in the forest, mask
dance, banya-banyan, maal-mal, kuru (grass) jogi, peacock-peacock etc. Dances are performed for
which 7 pairs of dhol-damau make them even more thrilled.
