Oilseed status in India: India is the fourth largest oilseed economy in the world. The share of oilseeds is 14.1% out of the total cropped area in India. Presently, annual oilseeds are grown in an area of 25.7mha with a production of 26.7 mt, the productivity being 1037 kg /ha . Among the seven edible oilseeds cultivated in India Groundnut, Soybean, Rapeseed-mustard together contribute about 85 percent of the country’s oilseeds production. India is the largest producer of sesame and castor, and second in the world in production of groundnut & rapeseed-mustard next to China. India produces around 8 million tonnes of edible oils while 15 million tonnes being imported (2015-16).

But there is no room for complacency because: There has been import of 15 m tonnes as the demand would be of 26 million tonnes by 2050. Fluctuations in production due to low and uncertain rainfall and poor crop management. There exists a wide commercially untapped yield reservoir in almost all oilseed crops. There is a lot of potentials in oilseeds in terms of production, processing and export.

Constraints: Technological factors – Non availability of suitable varieties, Poor germination, Lack of irrigation facilities, Weeds infestation etc. Agro –climatic factors- Drought, excessive rains or extreme variations in temp during critical stages. Economic and institutional factors

Varietal Improvement Agronomic Management Area Expansion Efficient Methods of Oil Extraction Supporting Trade Policies A multi-pronged strategy needs to be approached

What you think??? Why GMOs? Why hybrids in mustard? Why Canola?

Thank you
