The Raymond Foundation

The Raymond Foundation was
founded in August 2000 to address
the needs of children with reading
difficulties who were at risk of failure
in our nation's public school system.

The Foundation seeks to assist
children in obtaining the reading
skills necessary for success in school
and life by providing support to
public schools, charitable
organizations and community groups
utilizing effective reading instruction
with a proven record of success.

Initiatives supported by the Raymond
Foundation include one-on-one
tutoring using certified tutors and
teacher trainers, after-school
programs, and literacy technology
(combining interactive computer and
reading instruction).

More than 25 programs in 9 different
states have been funded by the
Raymond Foundation over the past
seven years.

In addition to after-school instruction,
the Foundation provides support for in-
school instruction, tutor training, the
purchase of curriculum materials, and
ongoing supervision and support to
ensure that students enrolled in
Foundation-supported reading
programs improve their reading skills.

The National Assessment of
Educational Progress (NAEP) data
reports that 33 percent of American
fourth-graders are unable to read at
the basic level and 67 percent fall
below the proficient or higher level
(The Nation's Report Card, Reading
2007).

Our Mission

- To work to improve the education
of children and their families by
supporting activities in public schools
or charitable organizations that
promote literacy or address other
important needs in an educational
setting.

- To identify and support research
related to this mission.

The Foundation pursues its mission
through grant support of activities
that it judges offer the best approach
to building the learning capabilities of
children.

In practice, the supported activities
have largely centered on reading
tutoring programs involving the use
of trained volunteers in public
schools for preschool through early
elementary school students. The
emphasis is on one-on-one tutoring
offered as an "add-on" to the school
program with full support by the
school staff.

The Foundation is committed to
collaborating and sharing successful
strategies. Through partnerships with
local corporations, other foundations
and community organizations, the
Raymond Foundation works to
leverage resources and ensure
effective results.
