New Employee Orientation/Induction Orientation called as on-boarding is designed to provide new hires with the information they need to function comfortably and efficiency in the organisation. General information about the daily work routine. A review of the firm’s history, founding fathers, objectives, operations and products or services, as well as how employee’s job contributes to the organisation’s needs. A detailed presentation, perhaps, in a brochure, of the organisation’s policies, work rules and employee benefits.

Purpose of Orientation The first days on the job were anxious and disturbing ones. New employees initiation practices by peers intensified anxiety. Anxiety interfered with the training process. Turnover of newly hired employee was caused primarily by anxiety. The new workers were reluctant to discuss problems with their supervisors. Employee orientation is aimed at minimizing such problems .

Evaluation and Problems of Orientation Programme Problems of Orientation Supervisor who is entrusted with the job is not trained or is too busy. Employee is overwhelmed with too much information in a short time. Employee is overloaded with forms to complete. Employee is given only menial tasks that discourage job interest and company loyalty. Employee is asked to perform tasks where there are high chances of failure that could needlessly discourage the employee. Employee is pushed into the job with a sketchy orientation under the mistaken belief that ‘trail by fire’ is the best orientation. Employee is forced to fill in the gaps between a broad orientation by the HR department narrow orientation at the department level. Employee is thrown into action too soon. Employee’s mistakes can damage the company. Employee may develop wrong perceptions because of short periods spent on each job.

Role of Technology in Designing New Hire Programmes There is an increasing trend of new hire orientation programmes ‘being conducted virtually using technology. About 40-60% of the training is being done using training modules that new employees can complete online. Many technical training modules like history of the organisation, product knowledge, organizational structure and global operations that do not require a facilitator or a trainer . Using technology for designing and delivering new employee orientation programmes is useful in creating customized programmes for each new hire.
