Reflective and
Evaluative Practice
YR 10 Visual Communication Design

Why is reflection and
evaluation important?
It is important for artists and designer to reflect and evaluate their practice
because it helps them understand their strengths and areas for improvement,
fosters critical thinking, and enhances their creative process.
Reflecting on work allows artists and designer to make informed decisions, learn
from their experiences, and develop a deeper understanding of their artistic
practice. This process also encourages continuous learning and growth, essential
for becoming skilled and thoughtful designers or artists.

Annotations
Annotations and reflections are to show:
• You understand the process
• Your Critical and Creative Thinking
• Explain your decision making
• You have reflected on your designs
• Your understanding of design terminology

Annotating
Research

Annotating Research
When annotating research you can discuss:
Why you find the designs appealing
Interesting & effective use of design elements,
principles, media, methods and or materials
How these examples could be used as starting
points or adapted for your own ideas
Point form is ok.
“Colour is eye catching.
Suits target audience”

This house
incorporates it
outside space well
using deck and to
make the area feel
spacious.
The exterior
design to this
house is modern
and incredibly
cool. It uses an
overhang well to
provide shade for
a table below it.
The green
colour of the
moss roof is
striking, as well
as ecofriendly
building
material.
This area looks stylish.
It has a lot of furniture
in it but still feels open
and fresh. The use of
light colours makes the
room feel bigger. I will
have a light colour
scheme like this in my
apartment design.
This interior incorporates
vibrant and attractive colours
that I personally like. The
contrast of lime green walls
and the dark floor looks
interesting and creates a
contemporary style which I
want to achieve in my design.
This space uses full
advantage of its height.
Putting a bed on top of a
living area is space
efficient. The large
windows allow a lot of
natural light into the
room. I would like to use
large windows in my
design.
Examples of research annotations

Referencing acknowledges the ideas or information of others. It gives the reader the
information needed to locate the sources you’ve used.
An example is shown below, it is colour coded for you to see all the necessary info clearly.
Internet site
Author or Organization. (Year, Month Day or if unknown n.d). Title of the Webpage. Website Name.
Retrieved date, from URL
Below is an example
Treehab Tiny Houses. (n.d.). The Banksia. Treehab Tiny Houses. Retrieved June 5, 2024 from
https://www.treehab.com.au/the-banksia
You should acknowledge where
you got your research from.

Think of your annotations as the narration of your
design process. The person assessing your work
can’t read your mind, so annotation is your
chance to explain and justify your design
decisions.
The purpose of annotation is to support visual
material and to explain the steps you are taking
in proposing and exploring design solutions.
ANNOATING IDEAS

Annotating Ideas
When annotating ideas, they should be combination of
description and analysis:
Descriptive: Why did you do it?
Predictive: Where might the idea lead?
Reflective: Is it a good idea? Does it fulfill the communication
need? Meet the purpose? Appeal to the target audience?
Show an understanding of design terminology.
Make reference to design elements, principles, media, methods
and materials and their intention .
Brief, but still
insightful and
succinct.
“Loft bed, maximizes space,
helps meets brief”

This is my preferred layout. I
think it makes good use of
available space. I might flip the
kitchen around so that the
plumbing for the kitchen and
bathroom are closer together.
Examples of annotating ideas
This layout is better
proportioned. The living
area is better placed, but I
don’t like the way the
front door leads into the
dining room table area.
The bedroom and
bathroom placement is
effective but I don’t think
the living area works very
well. The living area is too
cramped

Keys to effective annotation
Describe Your Actions and Drawing:
"This sketch shows one way how I can incorporate innovative storage solutions
into the tiny home's interior design.”
Evaluate the Concept/Image:
"The design is enhanced by the addition of multipurpose furniture, but the
layout needs adjustment to improve space efficiency.”
Consider Future Directions:
"My next step will be to experiment with various layout configurations and
furniture designs to optimize space usage."
