Reformation period 16 TH AND 17 TH CENTURY

history T he protestant reformation was a 16 th century split within western Christianity initiated by Martin Luther ,john Calvin and other early protestants .

Martin Luther The real foundation of reformation was laid by Martin Luther in 1517, w hen his book ‘The Ninety-five Theses’ got published .

Henry VIII The marriage of Anne Boleyn with Henry the eighth was the great cause of formation of Protestant Church.

Translation of the bible In English.

William Tyndale His services for promotion of Christianity reveals that he was great reformer of the 16 th century in England.

Edmund Spenser 1552-1599 His book ‘The Faerie Queen’ Reveals that he was extremely and zealous critical of R oman Catholicism.

Erasmus roterodamus 1466-1536 Erasmus remained Committed to reform the Catholic Church from within through his writings .

Sir Thomas more Sir Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ is the image of Island where all religions are authorized and Tolerance is the law.

Merits and demerits of reformation.

merits The decline of feudalism and the rise of common law. The circulation of Bible. The transmission of new knowledge and ideas. The invention of printing machine. The discovery of America.

demerits The abolition of papal authority started disputes within communities, which led to violence and radical challenge to all forms of faith. During the reign of King Edward VI, disputes started between the government and perishes over Church property.

conclusion In short, reformation was the start of intellectual progress. It awoke sleeping man and filled the minds with pure Christianity. It abolished papal authority and corruption of clerics. Also political powers were given to the House of Commons.
