What is regression? A Regression is the study of the nature of relationship between the variables. So that one may be able to predict the unknown value of one variable for a known value of another variable.
DEFINITION OF REGRESSION Regression is the measure of the average relationship between two or more variables…………According to M.M. Blair
Concept of linear regression Mathematical method for determining the best equation that reproduces a data set Regression method applied with a linear model (straight line) Uses: Prediction of new x, y values understanding data behavior Verification of hypotheses/ physical laws
Regression Equations A linear regression line has an equation of the form
CORRELATION REGRESSION In correlation analysis the degree and direction of relationship between the variables are studied. If value of one variable is known the value of other variable cannot be estimated. Correlation coefficient is independent of change of change of origin and scale Correlation coefficient lies between -1 to +1. In regression analysis the nature of relationship is studied. If value of variable is known the value of other variable can be estimated using the functional relationships. Regression coefficient is independent of change of origin but not scale. Only one regression coefficient can be greater then 1.
