Idea support method
to make people aware of
the side effects of convenience

BACKGROUND
・We often have access to convenient technologies and various
artifacts that support thinking and physical functions
・These artifacts go through ongoing discovery and
improvement processes to make people’s lives better
This cyclic improvement stems from the
ongoing “creation” of human artifacts
1

・When thinking about ideas related to artifacts and systems,
there is often too much focus on “enhancing convenience”
・Isn't there often more focus on discussing
These can cause unexpected problems,
especially when trying to make things
as efficient as possible
PROBLEM
“How to enhancing convenience”
or
“How to make things more convenient”?
2

・These examples show how important it is to think about
the long-term effects of making things more convenience
PROBLEM
We often focus on quick
convenience and efficiency
when coming up with ideas
However, it is inportant to
consider the lasting impact
that convenience can have
We must integrate this consideration into
our thinking process3

We aim to recognize side effects and prevent
them from occurring
・We aim to address the challenges of new ideas by:

We introduce the concept of "side effects of convenience”
(i.e., unexpected problems) to guide our thinking process
To find these side effects of convenience and include
them in the stage for idea generation

Goal

・We aim to address the challenges of new ideas by:
To facilitate this,
we introduce the concept of "side effects of convenience”
(i.e., unexpected problems) to guide our thinking process.
Our goal is to identify and incorporate these side
effects of convenience into the idea generation stage.

Focusing on the side
effects of innovation<
This method raises the following questions:
・Can we spot the impact of the side effects
of convenience while coming up with ideas?
・How can we include this impact when thinking
about the idea?
6

As a way of shifting the focus to the side effects of convenience
We proposed a method aimed at raising awareness of these effects
We focused on the "variable actions by convenience"

There is a need to induce awareness of the side effects of

HOW THE IDEA WORKS

To understand the side effects of convenience,
it is important to look at how convenience is created

During idea generation, confirmation bias often leads
We aim to think about the impact of unexpected actions
by showing them to remove bias
The reason for focusing on variable actions

This method supports the following hypotheses:
・Finding unintended actions, both those that
disappear and emerge,because of convenience
・Considering the impact of unintended actions

Experiments with the proposed method were conducted as follows:
Expt.1:Effect of the presentation of variable actions on ideas
・We measured the awareness of the side effects of
convenience caused by presenting the variable actions
Expt.2:Effects of the application on idea generation
・We measured whether the side effects of convenience
could be considered during without using the application

3:Have users think of ideas again
We observed how the ideas changed between steps 1 and 3.

while participants could identify problems,
they had trouble finding solutions
It is necessary to consider how to incorporate these

・The proposed method made it easier to recognize the side
effects of convenience by considering the
influence of variable actions
This suggests that the influence of side effects
could be identified at the idea generation stage
・There is a need to expand its capabilities to include
actions associated with new ideas as they are introduced
・By further refining the method, we can continue to advance
ways to consider the side effects of convenience and
foster innovative thinking
