What is a report? Highly structured form of writing. One’s reading/finding . Some form of practical work. Read quickly and accurately .
Report cont. Presents information. M eant to be scanned quickly by the reader. Uses numbered headings and sub-headings. Keep it simple. Avoid too long sentences. Uses short, concise paragraphs and dot-points where applicable Uses graphics wherever possible (tables, graphs, illustrations )
Purpose Of reports:
Stages in report writing Keep your self in the position of writer and then write a report. planning your work; collecting your information; organizing and structuring your information; writing the first draft; checking and re-drafting.
Report structure Title Authors name, address and its language is factual Contents What some one will find in report, its language is factual Abstract/Summary Presents the summary of the report or a brief review, passive style of language is to be adopted. Introduction Background, problem, approach, definition of special words used Main section Its consists of findings, discussion or explanation to topic. Lets take example of project report or technical research paper
Cont. Conclusions Do not introduce new material in this section Recommendations These are to persuade a person or a group. For example future recommendation for a project. References The reference list should detail all the sources you have used in your report. Appendices
